Introduction Background of the issue This report is written to review the effects of cosmetic surgery on teenagers. With the rising popularity of cosmetic surgery procedures performed on teenagers, it has become a concern to the society that drive them to find out the impacts of cosmetic surgeries towards teens and the reasons why teenagers desire cosmetic surgery. The process of surgically improving parts of the body has its beginnings more than 4000 years ago in the form of correcting injuries in the facial area. However, this is not technically right. Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery both are closely related but still exist significant differences. Cosmetic surgery is a subset of plastic surgery. According to The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (n.d.), plastic surgery is defined as a surgical process to restore and repair damaged area of body or facial deformities due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease in the purpose of bringing back to normal appearance. While cosmetic surgery is defined as an elective procedure undertaken on normal parts of the body with the only purpose of modifying and enhancing one’s appearance. Teenagers are referred to young people aged between 13 and 19 years old. Recent research shows most surgeries received by teens are rhinoplasty, male breast reduction, ear surgery, breast augmentation and lipoplasty. (American Society of Plastic Surgeon 2015). Cosmetic surgery has resulted in both positive and negative effects among teens. The two main benefits of cosmetic surgery are better improvement in psychological issues as well as improve health which are able to solve physical discomfort. Patients who are undergoing psychological or mental issues due to their appearance can be helped with cosmetic surgery which can lead to better improvement to their problems. Not only mentally but their welfare can be improved significantly due to certain complications or physical discomfort from their natural self. Cosmetic surgery can help patients to recover from low self-esteem due to their defect in their appearance. In Pennlive’s (2009) article states that teens lack of confidence in themselves due to quickly judged by their peers. Therefore, teenage years are among the most difficult as they are tormented with this issue of self-esteem as appearance becomes very crucial in teen years. With cosmetic surgery they feel confident and able to fit-in with their peers. According to Su (2012) stated that with social media becoming more popular, bad comments on physical traits are widely known and thus the teens feel taunted and depressed by these comments. Cyber bullying and bullying in school can affect a student. They will be teased in school and resulting in these teens not wanting to go school. For teens if their physical appearance can be improved they will be revived to be more confident and help increase their interaction with other students.
