Cosmetic surgery and Plastic surgery specialties are well known; however they are not the same19. Both plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery has the same main goal of improving a patient’s body however their philosophies and goals for patient outcome are different. The principles and procedures of cosmetic surgery are mainly dealing with improvement of individual appearance especially in the aesthetic appeal and proportion. These include procedures such as facelift, breast augmentation, liposuction, filler treatments, Botulinum Toxin Type A injections and laser resurfacing. Plastic surgery however mainly focuses on reconstruct and repairing defects to a normal appearance and function due to trauma, diseases and birth defects. Examples of plastic surgery procedures are cleft palate repair, burn repair surgery, breast reconstruction and scar revision surgery. Training for both plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery are different as well. In 2012, the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures done in American are breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, liposuction, nose reshaping and facelift while the top 5 minimally invasive procedures are soft tissue fillers, Botulinum Toxin Type A injections, chemical peel, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion18.
