Student counselors have been around since 1907 in the United States and remain a strong force in helping students determine future goals and careers. On average, student counselors make roughly $54,000 annually while maintaining a vital role in the decisions students make. With agencies and nonprofit organizations such as the ASCA (an organization dedicated to assisting any form of relations with student counselors to their students), that are now dedicated to ensure students have counselors as a form of assistance to fortify career plans, the rates of success have been skyrocketing. Revealing that these programs mean way more to the student than academic success. They provide means of guidance in forms of communicating with others to help objectives of future workplaces and overall futures to come. Communication is huge and if one is unable to collaborate properly amongst his and or her peers then one is not fit for the workplace. Additionally, they combine academic progress with social skills and make it so they intertwine. Before one must speak of how counselors impact students and their future decisions, one must have a grander scheme of something none as the counselor ratio. The ratio was establish as the ideal number of students to one counselor which stands at 250 students for one counselors. However due to increased population nationally schools have become overcrowded and these ratios can not be reached. A survey conducted by the ASCA as of 2015 the average student to counselor ratio stands at “ 482-to-1 in 2014-15, compared with 491-to-1 the previous year. Although the national average has decreased, it’s still nearly twice ASCA’s recommended ratio of 250 students per school counselor. ( ASCA survey p.3). Meaning that do to the massive increase of students the number of counselors imply can not be reached. On top of this even if the number of counselors is increased that is simply too much money. For because these are public schools they are paid by taxpayers taxes, so the only way to increase the ratio would be increasing taxes. Advocacy for Clinical Mental Health Counselors An issue of interest I have would include supporting the Mental Health in Schools Act of 2013. The original act has gone through various iterations and has had various sponsors. The latest sponsors are Senators Grace Napolitano, a democrat from California, and Chris Gibson of New York. It is now titled the Mental Health in Schools Act of 2015. This act is one of many acts the American Counseling Association considers as high priority.

So many students are going to choose the community college option and “affordability doesn’t help if a student can’t get into the right class or find help figuring out what classes to take”. Sure, there are these resources on community college campuses but when there are so many students demanding help, it will become difficult for counselors to become closely connected to the students when there are thousands of other students asking for help in their own personal way. When confronting the administration about reinstating group counseling, she risks her job and relationship with other school professionals. This course of action requires tact, data, and facts. By bolstering her student’s self-efficacy to help her disclose her identity to her parents, Mrs. Moon risks her student’s emotional wellbeing if her parents do not accept her. Counselors will give attention to their students that they are assigned to. This in turn will allow the counselor to evaluate the student’s performance and communicate with the student if any issues arise. Introduction With a recent increase in presidential power and a new presidential cabinet, concerns have began to arise regarding state rights and independence. One of these concerns is school choice in the form of school vouchers. The use of school vouchers has been a state decision, and Texas has always been a school voucher free state. Not only the national government favors private-school voucher legislation (with Betsy DeVos as the new United States Secretary of Education); so does Texas. Texas’ Lieutenant Governor, Dan Patrick, urges the private-school voucher bill (SB 3) to pass the Texas House (as it has already passed the Senate).
When I complete all of my schoolings I would like to become a behavioral disorder counselor. This career is for me because I love helping people, I want to help people better understand themselves so they can overcome their problems, and the human brain and the thought process has always been a huge interest to me. Is has always been a goal in my life to be somewhere in the healthcare field working, and this is the area that intrigues me and always keeps me interested. As of right now, my future plans are to finish high school, graduate college with a doctorate in behavioral psychology, and then further on to work as a counselor in a private practice.
Raising tuition year after year will cause a drop in applicants and affect current students’ retention rates. That is because tuition is already at an all-time high, making it harder for underfunded students to even think about entering higher education. Overtime students have grown increasingly frustrated with tuition rates. That is because in the past 20 years, "tuition increased twice as fast as the overall cost of living”
Emily has tried the simple common tasks of solutions. She has tried to talk to her fiancée and friends when she gets jealous, but this only can happen over-text and she said many find that it’s too late at that point to help at all. She has tried to talk to the people who cause these emotions or those who make it worse. She said that when she does it makes her feel poorly because it’s her issue and “shouldn’t have to deal with it.” Emily has considered the on-campus counseling that is provided but she states she keeps making excuses for her not to do it.

The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
I believe that clinical counseling was what I needed, but I feel it could have been beneficial and helpful to receive support and acknowledgment from the professional school counselors on staff at our school. I believe that even if you feel like you may not be prepared to help a student it is important to at least acknowledge and address a students concern.
