I will try to describe three of the counselling group separately and share what I can learn from the group. The first group is held by the experienced counsellor whereas the second and third group are held by my classmates. However, I believed that I can learn from all the group, no matter the leading skills or the content of the group. I enjoy being a group member within the counselling group because I can hear the sharing from others group member and learn from other.
I can observe the different between the experienced leader and normal leader, their awareness of the group member before the group is important. In the first time of having the group, our leader is an experienced counsellor. I was early for ten minutes to the classroom due

We need to find out the most suitable adjective for describing us and after the calculating of marks, it can find out the personality type. I am the type of steadiness, which have the characteristic of low profile, easy to get along with, good at listening to others and peacefulness. However, the shortage of steadiness is not willing to change, not willing to bare the responsibilities and not good at making decision. The personality test can help me to have deeper understanding to type of steadiness and other type of people, which give me some useful reminders for working with other …show more content…
The focus of the group is how do you think yourself and how other people think you are. In the beginning of the group, the group leader and co-leader tried to use the repeat round to help member get acquainted, which means the first member say her name, and the second member need to repeat the first member’s name and say his name, and so on (Facobs, el ta., 2002). After the first round, the group leader need us to describe ourselves and introduce our name again. It can provide a basic understanding on how the other’s groupmates think themselves. The second activity is a psychologic test, which tried to test how do you think yourself. The rules are following: we have to circle four adjectives in the word puzzle and it reflect how you think yourself. However, I found the words are different to my self-perception. Some of the groupmates also have the same thought. I believe that the psychological test is only a reference for understanding yourself. Then, the leader invited us to draw pictures on a paper and let other groupmates to guess the personality. In the process of guessing other’s personality and the other’s sharing, there are large discrepancy between our thought and reality. Our perception towards other base on the receiving information and our previous experience. So, while meeting new friends, try not to judge others base on the superficial part. Thus, the most understanding person for everyone
counseling, where the co-leader can take a few minutes work on some better communication methods so that the client can learn some new and healthier methods to communicate. When the co-leader does not have a client to work with, the co-counselor can be part of the counseling process with the leader of the group. When attracting group members, most counselors are attract group members by using printed materials and websites to attract group members. Counselor can also attract clients by word-of-mouth. By asking counselors if they would know people that would benefit from counseling (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2014).
The group was for registered sex offenders. The session was an example of a counseling group, which emphasizes improvement of interpersonal relationships and intrapersonal growth through the help of a group. T’Keyah used the skills of a democratic type leader, she was group centered, cooperated, collaborated, and shared responsibilities among the group. Group leadership skills that T’Keyah used throughout the session included active listening, clarifying, summarizing, supporting, empathizing, and giving feedback. T’Keyah also used the strengths approach during session.
In the previous video I practised particular counselling skills, which when combined, increased the support given to the client. As I provided the client with attention, by having an open body language, nodding and using hand gestures, they continued to speak about the situation and how it is affecting them. I was then able to paraphrase and ask open questions which the client answered, going into further depth as I had, and was, showing that I was paying attention. By challenging the client through questioning, we were able to discuss and identify the main problem for the individual and create an action plan in order for the client to reach their goals, feeling a sense of progression.
The text book, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy by Irvin D. Yalom with Molyn Leszcz begins with the preface of the fifth edition. In the preface, Irvin D. Yalom introduced Molyn Leszcz as his collaborator and how they met at Stanford University in 1980. He then discussed how they both worked hard collaboratively to combine old and new material to make this edition. Their goals for this edition were to prepare student therapists for the present-day workplace and to keep the current methods from decaying, so that students can gather wisdom and techniques of the field when they get the opportunity to utilize those methods as therapists. Yalom briefly talked about what each chapter in the text would discuss.
For this reflection assignment I attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The AA meeting I attended was at St. Joe’s Education Center in Ypsilanti at 7:30 pm. As far as the demographics of the group: The number in attendance was about 60 people I would say, it was very packed surprisingly to me. I did not expect it to be that many people there. When I think of an AA meeting I think of a small meeting with maybe 20 people that are a close group not around 60.
The purpose of group learning and development is to ensure that all learning styles are catered for and the ultimate goal of sharing knowledge is achieved. When using a group to deliver something new each individual can call on a fellow participant to confirm understanding. 1.2 Explain why delivery of learning and development must reflect group dynamics When delivering to a group it is important to consider, what is the normal behaviour within the group? Who plays what role?
In order to accomplish group competency, I will need to continue psychoeducation in counseling, attend conferences, and experience group counseling first hand. Keeping my education current and relevant will guide me to new understandings and the competency needed to be a therapeutic counselor. Attending conferences will lead me to further education and new findings. The art of practicing group counseling will allow me to learn from my experiences. All of these ways to accomplish competency will strengthen my appreciation for group counseling (Killacky & Hulse-Killacky, 2004).
Group Reflection Elements of Yalom’s therapeutic factors were apparent over the course of the semester while experiencing and conducting our breakout groups. Yalom refers to 11 therapeutic factors in the practice of successful group therapy with them being: installation of hope, universality, imparting information, altruism, corrective recapitulation of primary family, development of socializing techniques, imitative behavior, interpersonal learning, group cohesiveness, catharsis, existential factors. Below, will be a reflection of my experience in the group over the course of the semester. Group Cohesiveness Of the 11 factors, group cohesiveness or the warmth of the group in which everyone felt that they belonged was readily apparent at the
Safety in group counselling is top priority. According to merriam-webster.com, Safety is freedom from harm or danger. In group sessions, keeping members safe should be a main concern of the leader. It is said that members will not participate if they do not feel safe, feeling safe in the context of group counselling is to be protected and sheltered from unfavourable occurrences in the group. I agree, it is my opinion that the dynamics of the group is at risk if members do not feel safe as this will hinder them from sharing, they will be fearful, hence they will remain reserved and the purpose of the group will not be fulfilled.
I can know the actual response from the client or somethings may occur when in the actual counselling session, it helps me to have an experience to try to handle those problems, I believed that it is good for my internship or future career. Observation about the Group Dynamics The general group dynamic I observed during the class practice and presentation was that no one is willing to do the counselor. I believed that acting a counselor is very challenging for us, people who act as a counselor need to use many skills but if act as a group member can do what counselor said only, so people usually do not to be the counselor. And we always use some games to decide who was the counselor fairly, this was the way that we solve the problem.
Many theories of group counselling have borrowed ideas and approaches from psychoanalysis. The primary aim of the analytic process is reorganize the client’s personality and character structure. This aim is attained by making unconscious conflicts conscious and analysing them. Wolf (1963, 1975) developed group applications of fundamental psychoanalytic approaches such as working with transference, free association, dreams, and the historical factors of existing behaviour. The group leader relates understanding to the family-like relations that emerge among the members and between the members and the therapist.
Introduction To date I have completed three classes and one group facilitation exam for this semester. The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate my personal and professional learning for the duration of the module. It will discuss the definition of group work; how I planned for my group exercise; it will outline my learning as a facilitator and observer for a thirty minute exercise. I will use Bruce Tuckman 's five stage group development model to outline the stages of the group process.
Group counseling is a form of therapy that tackles issues of personal growth through interpersonal interactions, not just between the counselor and client, but also with people beyond their social circle – relatively strangers. It includes counseling groups, structured groups and educational groups. Each groups has its strengths and purpose for forming the group. Similarly, individual therapy has its own strengths and both forms of therapy have been proven to be equally as effective by empirical evidence and current research. Different theories help structure and affect process of group therapy.
Human beings are unique. Therefore, client-counsellor relationship is unique for each person. To ensure effectiveness of counselling,
In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject. The aspects that I can relate my experiences and thoughts with are the differences between advice, guidance and counselling as well as the goals of counselling.
