When you hear the term “Country Music” you probably think of the honky-tonk, banjo playing, rural area, type of music. Although that can be the case, there are many characteristics and subgenres of country music. Some of the most popular and well-known country artists include George Strait, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and the more modern artists including Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, and Brad Paisley. Although these artists are all considered country music stars, they all have a unique style and type of music that they perform. One of my favorite artists to listen to and also one of the most popular artists during the early and mid 21st century, is Brad Paisley. Brad Paisley was born on October 28, 1972 in Glen Dale, West Virginia. Glen …show more content…
Within these new albums, contained songs that had a wide range of characteristics. He created and performed songs with new instrumentals, lyrics, and styles of music. During this time, one of my favorite songs of all time was created, “Whiskey Lullaby”. Brad partnered with Alison Krauss, a traditional bluegrass singer, to perform this heartfelt song. This song was created by Jon Randall, and Bill Anderson, and was based off of Randalls, recent divorce. This song is very emotional, and Brad and Alison did an amazing job singing and performing …show more content…
He included new styles of singing, performing, and word play. Like I mentioned above, he often included humorous lyrics, story telling, and romance/love type stories within his songs. Also, in my opinion, country music was straying away from traditional country music during his career, and he kept traditional country music on track and helped it maintain its popular characteristics. Paisley also sometimes included gospel characteristics into some of his music and songs. Some songs included “When We All Get to Heaven”, “Me and Jesus”, and “The Old Rugged Cross”. All of these songs and many more include information about the gospel and christianity because Brad Paisley is known to be Christian. Country music is often considered to be associated with the south and rural parts of America, and in these areas, religion is very popular. Growing up in Tennessee, Brad was surrounded by religion and even performed at his church as I mentioned above. Although religion has been in country music for a longer period of time, I believe that Brad made it very popular, and made many influences on country music in
“You know, traditional country music is something that’s going to be around forever.” George Strait (Jackson, “Country Music Quotes”). While Hunter Hayes’ style isn’t exactly traditional country, he has similar qualities to Roy Acuff- the most popular hillbilly singer of the swing era (Starr & Waterman, American Popular Music pg. 140). Hunter Hayes song “Wanted” is similar to the country music in the Swing Era in chapter six of American Popular Music. Hayes and Acuff are alike by how they both were crossover artists, neither were afraid to try something new with their music, and they both could play a wide variety of instruments.
Neither fan base accepted the change, and the project even hurt him in his country music discourse. Jensen writes that “To "go pop" is to abandon and betray country music” and “to "crossover" into pop music was to perform, record, and promote country music in a way that would appeal to a larger audience and, thereby, increase radio air play and record sales.” However, great success generally leads fans to believe that an artist has “abandoned” country music (Jensen). Therefore, Garth Brooks was described as “crassly commercial” (MacLachlan). And unfortunately for Garth, rock fans also valued authenticity in their artists, meaning that they did not accept Chris Gaines either because they saw him as Garth Brooks attempting to go outside
Country singer/songwriter, guitarist, and pianist Sam Hunt is a rising star that you’re soon to know the name of. While Sam Hunt is new, he is still one of the best artists. Some may even say, he is the best. Not only has Hunt won many awards, he writes his music in a way that is relatable to all of his listeners, but it is also very diverse. His songs don’t reflect traditional country music, but pleases fans of all genres.
Johnson is one of country music’s biggest triple threats. With amazing vocal skills, completely imaginative and inventive song writing abilities, and a totally humble and personable demeanor it comes as no shock that this Canadian beauty got her big break in early 2000 with the release of her debut album, Room with a View. Earning her a few hit singles and multiple awards, it seemed country music loved the country cutie. Johnson continued to release three more creative and consistent studio albums, but failed to have the same success as her debut. The early 2000’s saw a shift in what was played on the radio and artists such as Austin and Johnson suffered.
The successes in the history the Louisiana Hayride brought not only the “King of Country Music” and the “King of Rock and Roll” but also multiple other country artists to listeners all around America, as well as spreading the developing rock and roll to countless listeners across
1. Bluegrass – Bluegrass is a form of country music that was inspired by the jazz and blues influences of the time. Bluegrass was also seen as being rooted into the Appalachian mountain lifestyle. The exposure of bluegrass music on the radio and in records is especially significant due to the music’s ability to spread country music throughout the US and not only in the south. Bluegrass music is significant because the mountain roots and spread allowed for country music become more attractive to listeners.
This style contrasted with the smoother “Nashville sound” in country music. (Langer, A). Jennings performed a lot with many other groups. Jennings played in front of many rock crowds, performing with the Grateful Dead and Commander Cody among other (Waylon Jennings, 1983). Jennings style was similar to the type of music he played.
It was hard to describe Cash as just a country singer. According to Freeman, besides country, “his materials often embraced staples of other musical genres such as rock and roll, folk, blues and gospel” (Freeman). He did not only care about himself, he cared a lot about others too. For example, he would go into prisons to play music for the sad, lonely and suffering people that would not be able to hear it any other way. Freeman mentions, “He began to do concerts in prisons, in San Quentin” (Freeman) which could have been frowned upon but they were actually just great acts of kindness.
George Strait was born May 18, 1952 in Poteet Texas. His father John Byron Strait who was a school teacher and his mother Doris Couser. He was raised on a 2,000 acre family owned cattle ranch. Throughout his childhood, he would spend weekends on the ranch. George had a sister and brother.
Garth Brooks was born Troyal Garth Brooks in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 7, 1962. He grew up in Yukon, Oklahoma, however. He attended Yukon High School and then received a track scholarship to Oklahoma State University. He was an
In 1945, Nashville, Tennessee became the center for country music. Country music was mixed with many genres such as blues and rock. In the 1950s, Rockabilly (The style that mixed rock and roll with "hillbilly" music) artists such as Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty began to record hit after hit. Many artists continued to make music and began to get inducted into the country music hall of fame. The Bakersfield Sound (1960’s) was a time where many felt country was too
The country music of our society today does not follow the ideology that country music can only be made by white Americans. Country music artists of multiple ethnicities can be found in our society today. Darius Rucker is an African American country artist who is quite popular on the billboard charts today. This is in deep contrast to the hillbilly music decade when no African-Americans were making hillbilly records.
It was a combination of traditional country music mixed with the hippy culture of the 1960’s. The bar scene where this genre was born with a mix of a variety Cowboys, hippies, bikers, and college students. A few artists that came out of this scene were Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristopherson, they were the ones who started the progressive country genre also known as the outlaw country
He has always been faithful to this traditional country music sound, regarded as having led country music as a whole out of the heavily pop infused sound it had and back to the roots of the genre. George’s authenic sound is due in part to the fact he is not a singer pretending to be a cowboy, he is a real life, down to earth cowboy. He was born and raised in Texas, home of the real cowboy, and a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He is not singing about a life he has only read or heard about but one he has actually lived and continues to live.
George Strait Introduction “I want to reach the point where people hear my name and immediately think of real country music (“George Strait Quotes,” 2018).” George Strait made this happen too, with hard work and persistence. Being turned down by multiple record companies was very hard on Strait. He kept working though, and it paid off.
