I have learned a lot about how to improve my writing and make it more engaging over this past semester. When writing the first paper I learned a lot about how I write and how to improve my writing. At the beginning of this paper I learned how to plan a paper, by writing down ideas and notes down on a separate sheet of paper. This really helps to narrow down the ideas that I was passionate about. While writing this paper I learned how to self-correct mistakes that I would make a lot throughout my paper.
. By doing all the quick quizzes and self-summary tests, it has given me a deeper better understanding of the chapters. It was like a very effective way of studying and reviewing what I had learned. Collaborative learning is something I should continue with because it will slowly help me overcome my fear of speaking in front or to the class and it will help me break out of my shell. It was worth knowing what kind of learner I am because now I know how I should go about things and how to apply my strengths and then how to work on my weaknesses.
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.
My motivation for self-improvement reflected my fascination with the course content. I was excited to learn about new information that taught me new writing tools I applied to my stories. For example, once I learned of passive and active sentences, the subject-verb-object sentence structure, and rules to structure dialogue encouraged me to return and edit past stories. This small example shows that a stronger commitment to this goal will be necessary to spark improvement. My experience in the course will serve as an example of why I’ll need to commit to this goal If I want to pursue legal studies
The first thing that came to mind was definitely you’re class, where I grew to be a confident writer. In my class we read about the importance of “shitty first drafts” which I think helped take the pressure off writing an amazing paper from the get go. I learned how to write for the genre and tried to hone in on my audience for the paper. Once I had my first draft finished there was a peer review in class, which is helpful because not only do you get feedback from them, but you also get to read their papers, which can give you ideas on what you could do better. After that, I took their feedback, revised, and then turned it into my professor to get more feedback.
I applied many of the new techniques and styles of writing that I learned into the rhetorical analysis aspect of my paper. My final paper is more analytic and focuses on my own arguments. I incorporated the new skills such as synthesizing my own argument through past examples into the essay. Furthermore, I was very careful with my work to eliminate grammatical and citation errors. Fixing the paper and adding my pers’ suggestions made me feel more confident about my paper. I remember just writing as much as I can to get the word count and then going back and
I am ready for my next writing class because now I know how to use transitions correctly in the essay. At the beginning of the course, I had no knowledge of what transitions were. As I look at the essay that I wrote on the second week of writing class, I notice some areas where I could have put transition phrases. This is shown at the end of third paragraph where I wrote, “ I learned a hard lesson about how to fight and defend myself ”. This lead into the fourth paragraph stating, “ I have been back from training in boot camp, and I feel really strong about myself ”.
The three assignments that I have selected from the research toolbox assignment are annotation practice, peer reviews/revision plans, and synthesis matrix. These three research tools have been very helpful to me throughout my last two major assignments, the literature review and research prospectus. The annotation practice was a great way to prepare me on how to cite my sources properly. It also helped me to practice on summarizing sources and putting the authors ideas into my own words.
Hiring at all the writing centers I observed was conditional on commitment to initial mandatory training. Agreeing to mandatory training shows the drive of the new hire to be invested in the commitment to the Writing center. One my favorite interview techniques as to have the applicant consult on a small paper. The goal of the consultation session was not to be perfect, but to observe if the applicant was invested in helping people. Being polite, friendly, interactive and eager to help were the skill sets under observation.
During my first few weeks in English 103 I learned so much from my professor. The JITT posts help me become a better writer because I was exploring different styles of writing. When doing the JITT post sometimes we look at different authors writing styles and purpose in the text. When analyzing sentence structures in the text it help me to better understand the reason why the author might choose those specific words in a sentence. It helps me better understand that certain word choices helps to create a tone and an image in the readers head.
First of all, my first lesson is how to developing content. This is an extremely important part in the process of writing a well-developed essay where it helps the readers to understand what the writers trying to prove in the essay. In order to do that, all these supporting points and ideas are needed to be clear and understandable and support the thesis.
