“Stand up for what you believe in, even if that means standing alone” - Andy Biersack. This quote suits people who are truly passionate about what they believe in, they aren’t just doing this because they want to be famous. Likewise, in both of the excerpts Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen and Crash by Jerry Spinelli, the author shows the different and similar character traits between the main characters in both stories. For instance, the author proves that the protagonist has different reasons and intentions for protesting. In the following stories, both protagonists in this specific excerpt of the story are extraordinarily strong in their beliefs but for a different intention. In Crash by Jerry Spinelli and in Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, …show more content…
There is a whole group of adults and children who are protesting with her to prevent the mall from destroying the woods. Unlike in Flipped, Juli is the only one protesting to not cut the tree down. In Flipped, Juli (Protagonist / Main character) is passionate about this tree, and she is also very responsible. She loves this tree and climbs it every day. She very passionate and is very protective of this tree. Juli is truly protesting to not cut the tree down. On the other hand, Abby is the character that wants to be popular, she wants to be on Television. She believes that what she thinks and wants, she has to have. There is a mall that is about to destroy the woods, Abby and many other people of all ages are supporting them. Abby is very irresponsible, stubborn, and ignorant. The text even proves it by stating. Abby makes up lies about her family and then protests against the mall her own mom is working for. Her mom tries to give her a punishment for what she did, but in return, she yells back at her mom and talks back to her and makes her be quiet. It shows that she is irresponsible and ignorant, unlike Juli because she never misses the bus and unless she has a legitimate illness she will go to school. Abby is really stubborn in a way. This matters because it shows that both characters have what they want. In the passage Flipped, …show more content…
Even though they are supporting a different cause. Both characters stand up for what is the right thing. In Crash the Main character Abby is really strong in her belief even though she is just doing it for being famous, she is just protesting to be famous. They both are protesting for a stop to destruction against nature. She stands up against her mom for protesting, which basically means that she is stubborn in her beliefs. They both have some connection between this. The author puts the characters in a type of situation where the Protagonist is really stubborn and strong in her belief, what she believes is the right thing. This matters because it shows that both characters are stubborn in what they believe and think that what they feel is the right thing. Flipped the Main character Juli Baker is really passionate and interested in this topic and we can tell because the excerpt briefly explains that she is very intelligent about what she is doing and she is strong in her beliefs. The excerpt proves it by stating “You are going to have to cut me down” Juli Baker is currently on the tree she loves and there are two unknown men telling her to get down because they need to cut this tree down, or else they are going to have to ‘cut her down’. Juli Baker stays brave and indirectly says, she is not going to get off this tree. In this excerpt, the character is strong in her belief. She proved that what she wants
Janie's "tree" gets cut down and strangled and destroyed throughout the book in several different events until the day someone walks in and takes the time to repair it. c. THESIS STATEMENT: Janie experiences love in harsh words and beaten down sprit. Never in her marriages has she experienced the unconditional love she desperately craves, until Tea Cake walks in and shows her true love. II. FIRST POINT- MARRIAGE TO LOGAN a. The marriage to Logan began sweet but ended with bitterness.
In contrast with the tree; the walls family were always beaten down due to poverty, spun in different directions by the wind; as in the millions of miles they move about through the country but they also have strong roots as well. Rose; Jeanette’s mother shows a deep interest and fascination over the tree. She loves to study and make portraits about it. In Rose’s perspective the tree is her view about her family; deep underneath their dysfunctional roots of trial and hardships they face; there is a strong bond of love and compassion that they have together as a
She's using her place of authority against him, because just like every child, our mothers come off as the mama bear and give us a sense of protection. Adams in a way is bringing back that sense of emotion back by identifying with him as his mother and putting John in
What is the right thing to do? Ellie Wiesel believes people should do the right thing, but more importantly these should choose a side. Indifference is worse than anger, rage, and hatred as Ellie said, “Anger can at times be creative. One writes a great poem, a great symphony, have done something special for the sake of humanity because one is angry at the injustice that one witnesses”(Elie Wiesel, The Perils of Indifference). With indifference people are only punishing the victim and helping to achieve the goal of the unrighteous.
Abigail blames her when in reality she was the one who grabbed the chicken and drank it's blood causing the girls to run off and create chaos. Abigail then went on a lying streak to save her
At the beginning of the story, many girls, including Abby, get caught dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris. Many of the girls are not recognizable, and Abby one of them. Abby eventually tells John the truth, who then tells Elizabeth. Abby is eventually confronted with the truth, so she has to do something about it: ABIGAIL: “My name is good in the village!
Mary- Abby stop it, Abby- Abby stop it”.(act 3) Abby is a killer. She killed a lot of people during the salem witch trials including John Procter. Finally Abby is a liar. Abby lies many times in the play.
Abigail being one of the youngest characters in the book, she’s a little immature. For example, she mocked Mary Warren in the courthouse as if her spirit were sent out on Abigail on the girls and where harming them. During this part of the story, Mary was yelling at them to stop, but the girls insisted with the childish behavior and say “Mary please stop” (Miller 121). When John was jailed later on the story, Abigail tried to bail him out by paying the guards and she wanted him to run away with her. Ohn refused and Abigail ended up stealing Rev. Parris’ money and running away with her
This will spark the main conflict in the play, and Abby caused it all because of her
During the play Abigail's bad decisions leads to a lot of commotion. She tries to fix her mistakes but ends up getting into more of a mess than she started with. “I want to open myself…I want the light of god, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced with Devil; I saw him i wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw sarah Good with the devil, I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil!
One night he finds Abigail dancing in the woods with some of her friends, mainly Betty, Tituba, and Mary Warren. They are accused of witchcraft, then they start blaming other people to stay out of trouble. Abby starts to blame people of them bewitching them to stay out of trouble and later i in the book to have some power because they are unmarried woman. Unmarried woman at the time had no to little power. This is how Abby is part of it but not the main reason behind it.
Abby has a concrete motive, her love for John Proctor and fear of punishment. Although religion may have be factored into the belief of satan, Abby is the one that fuels the fire of the frenzy brought on in Salem. Abby does use religion on her side, but religion is not the key player. After Tituba's confession offers a way out, Abigail decides to also do a confession of her own. “I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus!
For example, During Act 2 the Proctor tells Elizabeth that it's going to be difficult to prove Abby wrong. this is shown by a quote from page 1237. “if the girls a saint now I think it is not easy to prove she's a fraud a town gone silly” This relates to Abby's motive and behavior because at this point Abby thinks she has gotten away with it and think she is in the clear. she's acting like she's a saint of the town and why would she have done that. Furthermore later and act 2 you can see more examples of Abby's motive and behavior which two examples.
Near the end of the novel she observes, “In the years she had been tying scraps to the branches, the tree had died and the fruit turned bitter. The other apple trees were hale and healthy, but this one, the tree of her remembrances, were as black and twisted as the bombed-out town behind it.” (Hannah 368) The apple tree represents the outcomes of war. It portrays the author’s perspective that lives wither and lose life due to such violence.
She managed to infiltrate herself into the justice system and convince the court of her lies, and then the court forces the people to either accuse neighbours or friends or to risk being hanged. Mass hysteria takes on the village, changing the social landscape completely, destroying friendships, families and taking human lives. Abigail just sits by through all of that, being more motivated by seeing her plans succeed and she enjoys the power her lies obtain her. This exemplifies that Abigail does not have love or simple lust, she is not just a bad person, but that she has pathological obsession and is living in her own mind, still thinking that John will come back to her and that would be the ultimate fulfillment of her
