Personal/Professional Interest in Research Topic
I grew up in a household where Penn State football was lived, breathed, and believed. Ironically, I married a Penn State football lettermen and we are season-ticket holders who rarely miss a home football game. As we enter the campus on football Saturday, I am constantly in awe of the pride and connection all students have of their university. When I became principal at Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, I wanted to create a sense of pride in our school similar to that of Penn State University. I want students to walk into our building every day and feel a connection to their school. Football games, school plays, and art exhibits displayed on first Friday events should beam with Cedar Crest falcon pride. Students, no matter their background or passion, should consider themselves a Falcon. For my research topic, I want to study and determine if there is a correlation between a student’s connection and pride in their school and their academic success. Over the past 18 years, I have discovered the only students who feel connected to the school are primarily athletes. Non-athletic students do not wear school colors to school events and do not have a high sense of pride or connectedness to the school.

Parents want to instill a sense of independence and desire to teach the child independence and early life lessons. Students often experiment seeking to find their own identity and self. Unfortunately, this experiment leads some children down paths of loneliness, isolation, and failure. At the same time, students are cast into the new school environment of high school, where further isolation can occur. It is essential for all students to have a supportive and positive connection with their school as it would help stop irresponsible behaviors (Freidenfelt Liljeberg et al.,
She states that American culture has become too wrapped up in college sports, so much that it has affected America’s academics. Pollitt writes, “ In no other country’s university system, after all, does does sports play anything like the central role it does in American academic life” ( Pollitt 2). Though Deford also uses this logic stating, “ Overlook. Blind eye. Forgive them of their trespasses… keep them eligible” (Deford 1).
At Harmony School of Discovery we have a very tight knit group of students. When Discovery first opened as a new school it opened it’s doors to kids from everywhere and from every which background. Us students were forced to come together and start fresh with virtual strangers, leaving behind everything familiar. This reality forced us to build new bonds with people going through the same hurdles as us, adjusting to a new school and a disparate environment. We learned how to nurture and preserve close relationships among our classmates, relationships between teachers and students, and relationships between students and administration.
Over time, schools have become more refined and communicative, especially with the addition of student liaisons at board meetings, reporting on their school’s events, activities, and
In our culture, children are trained to think of themselves as separate individuals from the time they are born” (123). The author tries to insinuate that the instructors should not expect the majority students to grasp the concept of individualism immediately they join the institution. Her theory tries to prove the need for the instructors to understand different student abilities and needs. For example, Americans delineate children as soon as they are born. In contrast, other cultures embrace the children and the issue of individualism is not as pronounced as in America.
Although outside the walls of the school, relationships with the families and the community are essential for providing students with the needed wraparound support. Building transparent, authentic relationships with students, teachers, families, and the greater community fosters trust that we are able and worthy to serve
After graduating from MHS, the next challenge in my mission to ascend from my circumstances was to become the best student at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). With consideration of my mother not graduating high school, it was imperative and self- driving that I reward her sacrifices by excelling in my academic career. Eager to outperform, consequently, I earned the Smeal Merit Diversity Scholarship for three consecutive years (Freshmen-Junior) at Penn State. This prestigious scholarship is only awarded to the top five minority business students at Penn State. In addition to my academic successes, I became very active on campus and served as a leader at the top of four different campus-organizations.
Students these days are shielded from real world issues. There is a misconception that young people are fragile, so reality is sugar coated. The truth is, life can be a test for survival. Jeannette Walls knows this all too well. Walls experienced a far-from-normal childhood with far-from-normal parents.
However, most of the times they deny that they’re being harsh on things and they tell us that life is not easy. We’ve talked to elders and others that might help us with our problems but that doesn 't seem to help either. All the stress and expectations we receive from each parent and teacher has greatly impacted us in our everyday lives by trying to do everything at the same time and having to give up mostly everything. Resolution of Independence: I,therefore, introduce to all the students in the world these facts i 've stated, i solemnly write and announce that all students from the world ought to be independent and have self control over their own lifestyles. In order for students to be independent, teachers and parents should give us more time to do outside of school activities and let us focus a little more on non related school things.
Most students seeking a secondary education after high school and choosing what they are going to do, it is a challenging phase to go through, especially being eighteen years old. In high school, people are barely given the freedom to go to school and come back without guidance. At times, people seeking secondary education are strung along by "counselors" who make it seem like the next four years of our lives will be "the greatest years of our lives. " This isn't an argumentative essay about how students are deprived and stripped of their independence. Nor is it a persuasive essay about the challenges adolescents face going through this transition of "finding themselves.
A child’s education is affected by various elements such as gender, race, environment, economic factors, privilege, and more. These elements shape the outcome of a student’s educational experience and learning. They also determine what and how students will learn. In order to create an appropriate learning environment, there should be a sense of community. In other words, the common goal should be helping students succeed and reach their maximum potential.
Open campus high school helps improve student behavior. “Research shows that teen drug use and other dangerous behavior is highest between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. - the unsupervised hours between the end of school day and the time parents get home from work” (Merino 89). The mistakes or little flaws of a few students should not affect the students who did not do anything wrong (Saslow). At Frankfort High School some city school leaders hope that reviving open campus will better connect students with their community (Schanding). Open campus is not a matter of closing opening the campus (Saslow).
I realized that having this passion makes the research easier to complete and the writing more effective. I decided to do an ethnographic study on my high school. The high school I graduated from is not a normal high school. The school has fewer than two hundred kids and has many foreign students. I have a lot of passion for the school and have access to resources needed to complete the study.
The internal stakeholders at Penn State were the students and the football players the football staff and the board members of Penn State. The way the internal stakeholders were affected is that some people lost their jobs. The football players by having wins taken away and losing bowl games. Some players looked up to the coach as a hero and he was telling them he did not know about it. The football player found out that Joe Paterno had known the whole time that the sexual abuse was happening.
School is a huge learning process where students learn and are challenged academically and socially. Ultimately, the stress, work, and dampened self-esteems are all key factors in preparing a student for the real world and helping them work towards being a better
