Nature, they said, had conspired against them. (CP 188) “Hymns in Darkness” ridicules common weaknesses of modern man. The first stanza describes some weaknesses shared by all modern mankind. According to the poet, there is no connection between the ideal and the real aspect of modern man’s life. The modern man speaks a lot about the virtue called ‘humility’ but seldom practises it himself. It is the first casualty with the modern man. Muir describes a scene as “a beautiful countenance destroyed by some dreadful disease” (“Reservations” par. 3). Though the isocolon of beautiful and countenance, he creates flowing tone; however, it stops from the harsh consonance of “dreadful disease,” bringing attention to this change. Muir contrasts the dystopic nature-free land in saying “[humans] may disappear without any burning or extraordinary commotion whatever” (“Universe” par. 7). By claiming a lack of dystopia, he appeals to his audience’s ethos; he creates a inner conflict about, as the title of the piece suggests, “Man’s Place in the Universe.”

A paradox, or self contradictory statement, is the perfect way for the speaker to express his predicament. He does not “ deserve pleasure”, but he also “does not deserve pain” explains the speaker’s feelings of guilt and remorse for his immense fortune, while the working class can barely get by. In parallel lines in his poem, the speaker uses the words “failed” and “successful.” He uses these words so close together to demonstrate the failure he and civilization throughout history has faced in order to be
Having humility is a great thing to have. Even if someone is worse than Someone at something they don't say they are better or push them down. Humility is a very important trait to have. Humility may be the most difficult quality to learn and maintain. As a society we reward arrogance and “attitude”; and our heroes tend to be loud and brash sports figures, millionaire developers, movie stars, and the like-those kinds of people who don’t know, or don’t want to know what humility is (Marshall,
I can see why Eliezer questioned his faith because so many tragic events happened to him.
Throughout his text, readers identified phrases and words used in today's current time. He managed to archive phrases used during his adolescent years and smoothly integrate them into today's current era of language. While there were places where his tone was more serious, there were also places where his tone was as if he was talking to us as a well-known friend.
