Jonathan Edwards argues to the sinning members of the congregation who have not yet accepted Christ that God’s penalties for their iniquities and lack of faith are ineludible to any mortal, and that no attempt to overthrow Him exists that is capable enough. To deliver his point to his audience, Edwards employs multiple rhetorical devices such as simile, polysyndeton, imagery, metaphor, and hyperbole. A simile is present at the beginning of his speech, when he tells the sinners that their “wickedness make[s] [them] as it were heavy as lead.” This connection magnifies how sin poisons one’s soul and causes them to sink into the depths of Hell.
He thinks that sin is the evilness of the lack of trust in God that a person has which cause them to rebel. Luther believes that sin originated from Adams rebellious act and made all man sinners which subject to death and the devil (Granten, p.98). Evil and Immorality The reason why God slashed the length of humankind life is due their sins. For example, the story states that men married women howsoever they chose. Furthermore, the story says that the Lord discovered that evil filled the hearts of men, and the evil was great and perpetual.
Hooper’s sacrifice acknowledges that sin comes at a high price, as he wore the veil, he isolated himself from the Puritan society and no longer accepted him as that was advent. The theme of the Minister’s Black Veil is that everyone has a secret sin, dying from others and that no one person can escape sin. “The subject had reference to secret sin, and those sad mysteries which we hide from our nearest and dearest, and would fain conceal from our own consciousness, even forgetting that the Omniscient can detect them” (Hawthorne). Reverend Hooper wears the black veil to communicate to his congregation and acknowledge that he has sinned. He sacrifices himself by wearing the black veil to recognize the sins committed by himself and the others townspeople; coming to terms with bad sins and remaining as part of humanity.
This is very different from Hawthorne’s story, Minister Hooper veiled his face though no one asked him to and that is what scared his congregation. For Hooper the veil embodied sin itself, upon exposing it, he was claiming himself guilty, but his intention was for all of his congregation to wear one, so that they too could understand the truth; judgement will come for everyone because we are all sinners. This cost Hooper dearly, he felt isolated he lost friends, Elizabeth, and the rapport he had with the children. He became lonely, a recluse, fearful of his own image. Even though he suffered in self- loathing it could also be said that he fell into the sin of pride because he could have ended his suffering and Elizabeth’s had he removed in private the veil in her presence.
These feelings eat away at the soul leaving the person abhorred and hollow. What can someone do when even their own creator doesn’t love them? They become the monster they were created to be. Whether the person is Cain, Cal, Charles or Alex, the predisposition towards evil has been ever present because of the lack of love’s presence. The first murder in the bible was not when Cain shed Abel’s blood; the first murder was when God killed Cain’s freedom by refusing to love
That is to say evil dwells in everyone’s mind. Like Goodman Brown, people usually think the depravity of human must be caused by evil other than themselves. Here, the story allegorizes that it is our human nature that results in the fatal mistake. R.H. Fogle writes, “Goodman Brown, a simple and pious nature, is wrecked as a result of disappearance of the fixed poles of his belief. His orderly cosmos dissolves into chaos as church and state, the twin pillars of the society, are hinted to be rotten, with their foundations undermined.
Zeus was as cruel as God, and they invariably thought of themselves, and considered their life insignificant. In the bible, God punished people who didn’t believed in him, even took their life. In the Greek myths, Zeus also took lives of neighbors of Philemon and Baucis, because he thought they who dwelt in the valley wicked and deserved penalty. The strong power .doesn’t mean they can hurt others, which makes think of officers.
Furthermore, when speaking to Pope Nicholas III, Dante fails to restrain his emotions and after stating that he would “make use of words more grievous still,” comparing the catholic church to a monster that would “fornicate with kings” (Dante 19.103.108). Emphasizing that without all of its corruption and dependence on the rich, the church would lose its influence. By comparing the church and those empowered within it to a vulgar monster, Dante denies the church’s reputation of purity and good. Coherently, Dante’s placement of this pope in one of the deepest parts of Hell only amplifies the concept that those such as Pope Nicholas III or even a church, “trampling on the good and lifting the depraved” betray those that are good and betray God himself, are some of the most fraudulent and treacherous sinners of all (Dante

Kingsolver’s first goal of the Poisonwood Bible is proposing how an individual could make peace with the aftermath of their worst mistakes and flaws, as shown through the voices of the Price girls. Kingsolver’s decision to leave Nathan Price voiceless represents the seemingly untouchable arrogance and offensiveness of large powers that drag peaceful innocents into conflict for their own gain. Nathan has no voice because Kingsolver wanted him to be viewed from the outside. Nathan is the uncontrollable darkness that festers in humanity; he is the crimes of a previous generation that are inherited by a new, unsympathetic one that is helpless to change its past and must come to terms with it. Elie yells at God for his bad judgment for killing innocent people. “...you cause the heavens torain down fire and damnation. Dear Representatives, I come to you in hopes that you will consider doing work to improve our local park, James Park. James Park use to be a beautiful place where many community activities were held, such as concerts, fairs, neighborhood gatherings, and picnics. Not only is it not a place for community activities, but it also it is a hazard. We, the concerned citizens, urge you to look into ways to improve James Park.
This is shameful. Today, here we have a sensible, honest, productive member of our community. I cannot say I am quite sure how girls dancing in the woods singing songs translates to witchcraft, but the community says it so. With only fingers pointed and no factual or realistic information, we condemn our village to be hanged. A village, where we put the lies of young children above the credibility of our greatest elders!
