An alcoholic who only wants to make his money, Legree doesn’t have the respect that other slave owners have for their slaves. Tom being the kind hearted Christian that he is, helped the other slaves that fell behind in their work. By doing so he was constantly beat until the point that he was beaten to death by Legree, Before Shelby could buy him back. Shelby arrived and got Tom’s last message for his wife, that he died peacefully and his work was light. Uncle Tom was treated very well for the majority of his life, but as his owner owed money, and the other died he eventually got to a terrible master and Tom was beaten to death. Uncle Tom suffered the most out of the other characters based on the fact that he switched between so many different masters that lead to his

Tom prides himself on reserving his judgment of others until he takes time to observe and get to know them. This is a quality he is obviously proud of as he makes a point to describe his habits surrounding this quality in depth. Because of this Eva’s father ends up buying Tom for her. Tom and Eva grow fond of each other, and Eva treats her slaves well, even teaching one to read. Although Tom seems to be “evil” towards the end of the novel since he purposefully prolonged the Jim’s liberation, he is simply a naive child whose imaginations take the best of him.

Chapter 1: 2. When Nick first enters the Buchanan's house, the scene is not presented realistically. It is said that, "...the two young women ballooned slowly to the floor" (12). The women are painted as objects or even furniture in the room. This makes it seem as though Tom Buchanan is indeed the man of the household, and a strong one at that.

They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Miss Maudie's definition of a mockingbird and her vindication on why it is a sin fits perfectly with the character of Tom Robinson, especially in his situation with Mayella. " Tom Robinson was the only person who was ever decent to [Mayella].
