I will tell you a story that happened to me about 3 weeks ago. A teacher from my school organized a volunteer event for a monastery near my hometown. The monastery needed help cleaning and a lot of girls and boys from my school, including me, volunteered to help. One Sunday we went, even the principal of our school joined us. Once we finished, we were very happy with the work we had done. Apparently the principal was also very pleased with us because he then offered to take us on a trip as a reward for our hard work, even though we didn’t need a reward. Now you might think, “how come you decided that women are the ones suffering more from gender inequality?” Well you can decide for yourselves after you hear the following examples.
When I started looking for information on google, what made an impression on me was that the most frquent examples of gender inequality that showed up on the google search were examples of what’s happening with women from third world countries. I am not saying that they are not important examples at all because I came across some very shocking ones.
For example in Afghanistan where women have no right to pick who to marry and are married at a 9-year old age in order to settle debts and disputes between families. When a girl marries she becomes property of her husband. She doesn’t have the freedom to make her own decisions, as though she ever had them, and she must ask her husband for permission to go out. And this can happen only if she’s in appropriate attire – wearing a chador.
