Born in 1957, artist Catherine Truemans’s piece titled Eye Calving’s (Crunchie Eye, Time Out Eye, Mint Pattie Eye, and Painted Eye) represents an image of four diverse eyes. This piece was made in 2007 as a response to anatomical illustrations of head dissections rendered in Europe in the 17th-19th centuries. The depiction of a Crunchie Eye, Time Out Eye, Mint Pattie Eye, and Painted Eye was influenced by the techniques and materials Catherine learned in Japan in 1990. The materials that were used to create this piece were acrylic, confectionary wrappers, paint, mother of pearl, and graphite carved on 100mm x 100mm Chinese Boxwood. Catherine has chosen to use nontraditional inlay materials, substituting the pure gold foils traditionally used in …show more content…
This implies that this artwork is composed of shapes. Most of the shapes are formed by lines and shifts in colour. For example, in the Painted Eye, lines outlining the eyebrow hair and the contrast of colors (yellow and black) create the eyebrows shape in the artwork. In addition, the light source in this piece is not seen. However, Catherine uses lighter shades of colour on higher aspects of the calving’s. Such as light yellow on top of the darker, shaded yellow to show the different levels of shape and to make it seem like a glow is cast upon her face. Warmer tones/shades of colour are used to show direction of light/shadows and the inwards carving shape near the eyes. Furthermore, texture is created using the confectionary wrappers. Colors are primarily important in regards to this art piece as it presents a finished and pleasant view to the eye. The Crunchie eye, Time out eye, and Mint Pattie eye depict the following colors of skin tone, black, and white. Additionally, each has a different eye colour; fire red, brown, and orange. The painted eye is skin colored yellow, with a green
The inner coffin of Meret-it-es originates from middle Egypt in the year 350 B.C. It is located with the rest of its collection at the Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art. Throughout this semester as a class we have gone over many different terminology, seen many artists from all different countries and time periods. We have also learned about different kinds of art and media that the Artist work with. Over the entire semester I have gained a greater appreciation and understanding for art. Taking all of the new information that I learned this semester I choose three pieces of artwork from the St. Louis Art Museum. Two are similar to each other and the other is very different.
Fox in the Snow is eye catching as you walk up to it. There is so much, and so little to look at in the work, yet it captures you. This piece of artwork is displayed on the second floor of the Dallas Museum of Art in the European Art Section. The artist who painted it is Gustave Courbet, a Frenchman who lived from 1819 until 1877. The media used to create this was oil on canvas, and it was painted in the year 1860 during the Realism Era.
QUOTE (PG. #) SYMBOL COMMENTARIES “In color the shell was deep cream, touched here and there with a fading pink. Between the point, worn away into a little hole, and the pink lips of the mouth, lay eighteen Inches of shell with a slight spiral twist and covered with the delicate embossed pattern” (16). conch The conch represents civilization.

Lightning Lipstick and BLAH BLAH Society often forces biracial and multicultural people identify themselves with one ethnic group by denying the other part of their ethnic background. An analysis of the many scientific studies, literature, and art reveals the complexities of growing up with parents of different races. The tendency to prefer lighter skin effects how biracial children form their identities and often causes them to deny their black heritage. When specifically examining the painting Lightning Lipstick, by the painter Robert Colescott, and the scholarly article, “If you’re half black, you’re just black”:
Anytime she sees a number or letter they have their own unique color.it became so distracting for Mia that she had to get a math tutor when she went into eighth grade and she does horrible in Spanish due to her colorful
The painting is oil on canvas and contains an extensive amount of contrast. For example, the bright vermillion blanket against the dull eggshell colored door. The disparity between the colors used is prominent. Additionally, the fusion of ornate patterns and simplistic solids is evident. The tablecloth is a geometric mixture of cream and periwinkle.
Melvin Williams Arth 1381 Professor Zalman 13 November 2014 Visual Analysis The painting, The Basket Chair c.1885 by Berth Morisot, and the painting The Orange Trees c. 1878 by Gustave Caillebotte, are both magnificent and interesting pieces that I got the opportunity to see. The paintings are both wonderful pieces and their composition overall is very impressive. Both paintings have different aspects in the way the artist displayed modernism, formal characteristics, class and gender, and the subject matter of the painting itself.
Even the woman’s frame and posture seem to follow the lines created by the railings of the viewing box. The railings are also implied lines, the first thing our eyes go to is the woman, and then we follow the railings to the man who has his gaze set on the woman. The man’s gaze gives us implied lines that lead us back to the main focus of the painting, the woman. The artist also uses light and dark to guide our eyes to the important parts of the artwork. Most of the artwork is dark, while the woman and the man looking at her are in the light.
Kahlo used very thin lines to define both the Fridas and aortic valve. This paing had a strong use of implied lines, Frida used implied lines to define the movement and blood flow between the two hearts. She also used them to put influence on the clothing to give them a realistic feel. I didn't see as many shapes as I did line composition. The few shapes I came across throughout the image was an oval and rectangle.
They lead your eyes to the large boat, onward to the bottom, where there are animals boarding it. The lines are also very sharp. They outline the shapes in the painting, giving the shapes a clear border. The next element is shape. The shapes are at very sharp angles.
In Duong Thu Huong’s Paradise of the Blind, Hang has been placed on a path of self-sacrifice and duty by her family. Her life unfolds in stages- childhood, young adulthood, and her eventual role as an exported worker in Russia. With each of these shifts in her life comes a shift in setting and a shift in her emotional state. Hang’s changing emotional state depicts her “coming of age” and her growth as a character. Setting is important to creation of shift in the novel, and is often described in detail.

The portrait represents the beauty of the time period. It holds simplistic colors with detailed shading. The artwork is very intriguing to me. I love the detail in the background, there are tiny brushstrokes that makes up the mountains and sky. Also, I find the shading of the mouth and eyes very interesting.
