• The setting starts out at the Grady’s farm in San Angelo, Texas. Then after his mom says they are moving he bails and runs down to Mexico with his best friend Rawlins. In some small town they stopped at they picked up a new friend Blevins. Then one night it started storming and Blevins being scared took and curled up in the ditch and slept there till morning and found his horse and gun missing. He went into the town of Encatada and found the horse and ended up shooting someone and was placed in the jail of Encatada. As they were moving south they found a little town named Cuatro Ciénegas where they found jobs as a handy mans for Rawlins and then Hector saw how good John was with horses and moved him to be a horse breeder. After John and Alejandra’s relations Hector finds out and they are placed in jail back in Encantada with Rawlins. Then later Blevins is killed for the murdering of someone, and John and Rawlins are released by Hector against his will but because his daughter pleads with him. Then once free Rawlins goes back to his home in San Angelo, but John still in love with Alejandra says he has to go back and see her in Cuatro Ciénegas. Once there she tells him he needs to leave because she isn’t allowed to love him. Once his grandfather died John Grady made the decision to leave his ranch and head to Mexico to continue his life as a rancher. When John Grady goes to Mexico he goes through a life-changing journey in which he learns a lot about the world. When John Grady Cole leaves his home and ventures to Mexico he gains knowledge of the world, but he also leaves his past behind him and along the way looses the innocence he had before he left. The second John Grady Cole, Rawlins, and Blevins crossed the Mexican boarder they put their previous lives behind them.
In Bridger Wells, Nevada in 1885 two characters known as Art Croft and Gil Carter ride into town and enter Darby’s Saloon. When these two entered the environment was repressed due to recent incidents of “cattle-rustling”. The townsfolk suspect that Art and Gil are hustlers. Shortly after a man enters the saloon and announces that a person named Larry Kinkaid which was a rancher has been murdered. Immediately after the townsfolk form a posse to pursue the person responsible for the murder.

This novel, at first, seems to be about the orphan train that ran from New York City to Arizona. However, the title is misleading, as it suggests to the reader that the novel is focusing on the orphans. Rather, Gordon uses the orphans as a lens through which one can view the inequalities between the people in Arizona.
