Diversity is important in social work because it allows social workers to help a wider audience of people and communities outside of their own. As a social worker, one must expect that they will encounter clients that have a different culture, ethnicity, race, gender, religion beliefs, etc. then what the social worker is used to. This can be related to cultural competence in social work. Cultural competence is the capability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds. Diverse social work settings gives people an opportunity to come together and work towards the same goal: improving the overall quality of life for all people regardless of culture. In order to encourage diversity in a social work profession, I make sure that clients
Culture competency is defined as one has the knowledge, the abilities and the skill to deliver care congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices (Purnell, 2013). As a nurse or a health care provider, increasing ones consciousness of culture diversity improves the possibilities for health care practitioners to provide competent care (Purnell, 2013). Nurses and all health care providers should be aware of other cultures to provide the best care that they can for that individual. Developing a relationship with diverse cultural groups involves good interpersonal skills and the application of knowledge and techniques learned from the physical, biological, and social sciences as well as the humanities (Purnell, 2013). I am choosing to select the Indian culture for my first assignment.
Over the past four months, this course has been one of the most eye-opening experiences I have had during my first year of college. Although I have always realized the importance of being culturally competent in daily life, specifically healthcare, I was unaware of the many ways that cultural competence can be obtained. This class gave me the opportunity to view situations from a different perspective, especially through the weekly discussion boards and peer responses. Learning from classmate can teach more valuable lessons than listening to boring lectures or reading hundreds of pages in a textbook because it is easier to relate to experience rather than hypothetical situations. For example, one of the discussion boards asked us to detail
Many organizations have recognized that the workforce is changing and they are working to create a work environment in which diversity and difference are valued and in which employees can work to their fullest. They are dealing with the problems that arise when people in the workplace communicate. Businesses must be aware of the impact of cultural
According to the Rogers & Vismara article, while cultural factors may influence the course of detection, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, child treatment programs for autism tend to lack cultural considerations. One strategy the authors mentioned to address this issue is to train researchers and service providers in cultural competence. What would be some of the essential components of effective cultural competency training that is uniquely catering to culturally diverse children with autism spectrum
Being culturally competent as a social worker is a requirement in the field. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics concludes, “Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures” (2008). In the field, social workers encounter individuals of many different ethnic and diverse backgrounds. It is important for social workers to understand the cultural norms of any culture! The reason why is because having this knowledge helps the social worker bridge communication barriers with a foreign individual. In turn, this may contribute to building an emphatic relationship with a client from another cultural background.
Educators need to develop and enact cultural competency to work effectively with children, families and staff who may have diverse experiences, values an beliefs. We should interact with respect, be constructive and have a positive attitude towards others. We as educators should think critically about ways to interact with children, families, staff and community to enhance relationships and exchange information and limit and decrease stereotypes.
Throughout the course of the semester, the most talked about topic is cultural competence. The book defined cultural competence as “the ability to effectively provide services cross culturally” (Jandt, 2013). This term is important in the health care field because a variety of people from different cultures will be encountered. As a result, a conflict may arise between the health care provider and the patient, and it is the nurse’s job to provide the best care that accommodates the patient’s views as well. In order to provide the best care, the journal article provides ways on how to treat patients who have opposing views.
Cultural competence is vital in the nursing profession, one any given day the nurse is working with patients from multiple different cultures. It is crucial that the nurse give the patient cultural competent cares, which allow the patient to receive the best quality care that he or she needs. Cultural competence is defined as the “awareness and understanding of unique characteristics of a group’s social and cultural attributes, health beliefs, and values, but also encompasses interventions that reflect this awareness” (Cope, 2015, p. 305). It is vital to incorporate the beliefs and specific care of the patient’s culture into the patient’s care plan in order for the person to have the best quality care. As a nurse, there are going to be many
Cultural competence is a process of understanding various beliefs, values, practices, and behaviors of a cultural groups particularly the ones that is different than our own (Potter & Perry 2013, p). In order to be culturally competent one has to be free of prejudice that is, having an opinion, mostly unfavorable, towards a group of people without any knowledge about them. Being bias is another hindrance to be culturally competent. It is easy to favor our own culture against another group because our perception of normal is based on what is typical in our group. In 2013, there are about 41.3 million immigrant living all over the US (Migration.org). This means that there are a lot of people in the country with different cultural backgrounds.
I think it is extremely important to be culturally competent. I would like to study the culture of my population to start with. In AODA there already is a certain amount of culture with numerous subcultures that is quantified buy the popularity of the drug of choice to the individual. Alcoholics find themselves in an extremely large culture or population, while benzo abusers would be a relatively small group, but growing daily. I plan on learning more about the different subcultures by going to different seminars and obtaining my own data through books and the World Wide Web. I also believe that practicing some active listening skills with the people of terror different sub drug cultures, that already intersect with my life will be a huge asset.
Thank you to everyone who nominated me for Cultural Chair. For me, I was involved with cultural events throughout High School. I was involved with International Festival and Vietnamese New Years. I always wanted to learn more from other cultures because I know it is important to know about others if you want them to understand about your culture. It is quite unique how few cultures are similar to each other. If I were chosen as cultural chair, I would love to come up with a mini international festival where we can co-host with other organization. It would be great to see how diverse our community is. Furthermore, I have experience on planning events where I need to know the budget that is needed, how many people to volunteer, how
How would you Develop Cultural Competency as a Social Worker? “As a social worker, your aim should be to advance social justice, equality and to end discrimination. One of your most important goals should be, to be the voice of your client’s, in order to make sure that their rights are not violated and they are treated with dignity and respect. Learning to deal with how and what types of social issues regarding injustices exist, will help when we are dealing with real life discrimination and inequality that occurs and may be affecting our clients. By understanding and identifying social injustice and inequality, we can offset mechanisms of oppression and how they work.” (Perry and Tate Manning, 2006)
The aim of this paper is to reflect on the role played by a leader when differences in culture occur. For a leader it is very important to understand the obstacles represented by culture and consequently to avoid problems that can arise. As we learnt during the course Leadership at MCI, leadership is a process, which includes also the ability of the leader to manage difficult situations, conflicts and diversities in the group of workers. This is only possible when he creates a relationship with the employees aimed in understanding the personal and cultural background that characterised their behaviour and values.
According to John Kotter from Harvard Business School, leadership and management are both complementary as well as distinct from each other. Kotter talks about the dynamics between leadership and management as being a part wherein the leadership process involves developing the vision of the organisation and aligning the people with the vision of the organisation and motivating employees through the satisfaction of their needs. Leadership brings in change in the organisation.
