Culture Quilt Traditions-Chinese New Year According to my mother, Chinese New Year started when in a village town, there was a beast attacked the village and eat their crops and livestock. The villagers came together and decided to make a lot of noise to scare the beast away and it worked. Because of that, the villagers decided to celebrate every year by making loud noises and setting off firecrackers so the beast would not come back. This is the myth that Chinese New Year is based on.
Growing up in the Deep South in Alabama, I am considered a true country boy. My mother and biological father were both born and raised in Alabama. They married very young, however their marriage did not last. Subsequently, my mother met and married a soldier who was stationed at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. Upon marriage, were quickly stationed at a base in Germany.
During this semester, I gained a lot of skills and knowledge about interpersonal relations. As a human being, as a member of the "global village", everyone need to communicate with others. It is important to learn how to communicate well and how to build a healthy and positive interpersonal relationship with others. Like the textbook’ name “Looking Out Looking In”, we looked in the communication itself, looked out the language barrier, nonverbal messages and effective listening, and looked at relational dynamics. I learned and recognized about how environmental factors can impact our communication.
Culture refers to the common beliefs and behavior patterns of a group of people. In an organizational setup, it refers to the common values that the stakeholders of the organization share, and impact their decision-making process. According to Cristina De Rossi, “Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things” (De Ross, 2015). Western culture refers to the cultures that are heavily influenced by European cultures, and has its roots from the Greco-Roman cultures as well as Christianity and spread through immigration to other parts of the world. Eastern culture is the culture of the Eastern Asian countries including China, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, and India (Zimmermann, 2017).
I would like to think of myself as a well rounded and worldly individual, I have travelled the to different parts of the world and have been exposed to different cultures and beliefs. I have had also had the opportunity to create lasting friendships with a variety of people of different races, ethnicities, socioeconomic status, and religious beliefs. The community in which I live is extremely diverse and has been dubbed "The Second Chance City", by Readers Digest due to its influx of foreign-born residents. We also are home to a struggling low income population that utilize the emergency department for almost all of their healthcare needs. Becoming a nurse and having the opportunity to work in such a diverse community has served to further my knowledge of the customs and beliefs of others, and how important cultural sensitivity truly is.
You may not know what a cultural lens is, but it’s quite simple. We use these cultural lens very often, more than most people think. A cultural lens is seeing or viewing a certain way of the culture, but being able to take this cultural lens and understand different people and cultures. To have this cultural lens you need to have life skills like empathy, listening and understanding. Everyone one needs to know that each culture has certain ways of doing things in their culture and everyone’s culture is not the same.
Critical Reflection In this assignment, I am going to define cultural awareness and cultural intelligence, and will also discuss how they relate to each other. Cultural awareness is the foundation of communication; it involves the ability to standing back from over selves and becoming aware of cultural values, beliefs and perceptions (Brislin.2006). Being aware of own cultural includes the goals and boundaries of a cultural; it also includes religion, language and relationships. On the other hand cultural intelligence has various meanings (Brislin.2006).
Up until now, I have had very little cross-cultural experience in the course of my life. Beginning with the fact that both of my parents are Dutch and the fact that I grew up here, made me a fully Dutch citizen, both in terms of origin and education. I am born and raised in a small village in the Netherlands, called Bodegraven. My parents have not provided me with a cross-cultural background as they both grew up on Dutch farms. However, they took me on holidays to several countries in Europe and to Canada and America once.
The Hofstede Cultural dimensions elaborates the cross cultural differences of several different countries which demonstrates how one country is different from the other in regards to cultural dimensions that influence the financial reporting. There are six dimensions that are described which are: Power Distances that explain the involvement of the workers in the business decisions, Masculinity versus Femininity which elaborates the desire for materialistic achievements as opposed to real achievements, Collectivism versus Individualism explaining the level of both selfishness or selflessness, the Uncertainty Avoidance Index which analyses the abilities of a country to dispose of any unexpected situations, Indulgence versus Restraints that refers to the ability of the country to participate in the fun loving events opposed to the countries who give less priority to these types of events, the final dimension included is the Long Term Orientation versus Short Term Normative Orientation that that explains the ability of the country to make associations with the past, present and future and those countries who fail to do so. These six elements represent the fact that different countries have different cultural dimensions which have different influences on the financial statements. The film Lost in Translation follows two Americans visiting Tokyo during important transitional periods in their lives. Charlotte is a recent college graduate trying to figure out her career while also moving on from the honeymoon phase of her new marriage. Bob Harris is essentially going through a mid-life crisis as he sorts through life post-movie stardom and struggles to maintain a relationship with his overbearing wife. The two find each other in the hotel bar as a result of their inability to sleep and form a connection based on their mutual isolation in both their relationships and the city of Tokyo. The film touches on the importance of communication as well as what it is like to be a foreigner alone in a vastly different culture.
INTRODUCTION We belong in a time where the world goes through constant changes. Life today is so fast-paced and dynamic that we sometimes knowingly ignore what 's happening around us since it may instantly change anyway. Culture is a bond that ties the people with the organization and, in the process, brings them together to pursue common goals and objectives. There are some elements which we need to keep in mind about culture i.e. communication, cultivated behavior, learned and accumulated experience, values, norms and many more. In today’s market scenario, it has become crucial to understand the importance of culture.
Culture is comprise of religion values ,economy ,languages ,class ,material items ,social institutions ,customs ,manners ,education, policies and attitudes (Czinkota & Ronkainen ,1993).Kirkman and Shapiro (2001) described that cultural diversity affect the management styles .He stated that managers with different cultural backgrounds showed different behavior, attitudes, beliefs and basic values. Moveoneinc (2013) stated that culture has prodigious impact over the management style. For example, in Japanese firms almost all employees are participating in the process of decision making. But in the society of America, only top management is involved in the decision making of important and vital matters. In the same way, reward systems are designed on individual performance in western countries and America whereas individual performance has less significance in Japanese firms.
