Introduction
Campbell (2004, 62) states that cultural differences tend to be revealed in language, and misunderstandings between people from different cultures tend to arise from their use of language to communicate with each other. Here, I will ask how linguistic and cultural diversity affects communication between students.
This study will investigate and analyse the causes or situations in which conflicts or misunderstandings can happen between students that are related to different cultures and languages.
It will also will outline problems experienced in multicultural learning environments and show factors that inhibit intercultural communication. In addition, this research will highlight current psychological and cultural issues which are relevant to contemporary life in tertiary institutions.

This makes us multicultural. Du Toit (2004) explains that multiculturalism is more than the expression of cultural variety, it also concerns communication. He adds that for multiculturalism to ‘succeed’ and in order to stimulate peaceful coexistence, meaningful communication is a requisite. Higher education was the privilege of the whites with separate universities for Indians and Coloureds and three institutions being designated for Africans, which were: University of Fort Hare, University of the North and University of Zululand. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States founded primarily for the education of African Americans. Prior to the mid-1960s, HBCUs were virtually the only institutions open to African Americans due to the vast majority of predominantly white institutions prohibiting qualified African Americans from acceptance during the time of segregation. As such, they are institutional products of an era of discrimination and socially constructed racism against African Americans (Joseph, 2013). The rumor regarding cultural diversity on PWI campuses must be conceded due to the race dominance that is apparent at these schools. However, making a statement that African-Americans at PWIs forget the culture that they come from would be truly false. Comprehending the lack of minority students at college allows for those minorities to use that lack of diversity as an advantage. With a little number of minorities, it enables them to understand oneself and the circumstances that surround them more deeply. This results in more diverse opinions and perspective to be a factor in conversations, changing viewpoints on different situations.
The elite universities regularly talk about the diversity, but they are the schools that do not practice it as seen in the way that they set the values of diversity. Many of students in the US schools tend to choose their friends based on if they have something in common with them. This is because America students will feel uncomfortable with people who have opposite ideas. This makes America students cannot communicate to each other. For example, when I was in high school, there were more than ninety percent of students are whites.
It is clear that these institutions have played a critical role in shaping American society. HBCUs have a rich history of providing access to higher education for Black Americans during a time of slavery and institutional racism. Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial instability, declining enrollment, and perception issues, HBCUs have continued to produce successful graduates in various fields and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Looking towards the future, HBCUs have a unique opportunity to continue their important role in advancing social justice and promoting diversity in higher education.
A black person at an HBCU feels accepted into the community , because they are around people who they feel comfortable with . A white person at a PWI feels recognized, and they are at ease, because they are around people who look like them. Both HBCUs and PWIs give the students access to the higher levelhigher-level learning that they need in order to be successful in their field of business. According to the dominant theory the affirmative action was firstly introduced to deal with two types of social disruption in the 1960s as campus protests and urban riots in the North. Teachers must first be aware of stereotypes, ethnocentrism, and biasness. They should apply management techniques to the physical space as well as students’ behavior.
