This training should incorporate culture, diversity, mental illness training, youth development, bias and racism”(Z. Cheney-Rice). The police needs to be trained more in other areas where they can develop a true connection with the community. Cops are more trained in other areas where they are taught to use and a handle the correct way, but when it is all set and done it is important that on top of this training they more training in which they can solve problems in better ways. This is like dealing with a rude customer, the worker is trained so that they handle the situation in the calmest and best way possible and the cops should get more time of this type of training in order to get the best results. This will then further on lead to less excessive force being
Bittner (1970:45) states that policing is inherently a discriminatory practice as police are distinguishing suspects from everyone else. Despite there being ethical and impartial police officers within the force, there are those officers are perceived as the ‘rotten apples’ in the force. These officers engage in corrupted behaviours by exhibiting discriminatory and prejudiced conduct towards minorities, as racial profiling can be seen as a practice of ‘hot spot policing’ by allocating their resources and time to areas of high-crime. However, this is in itself discriminatory because by allocating vast amount of resources to these areas of high-crime’, which are mostly of minority neighbourhoods, innocent individuals get caught in the crosshairs
According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, departments that serve less than 2,500 people are 84.4% white and departments that serve millions are 53.4% white (as cited in Fifield, 2016). Notably, Over the years, a lack of diversity within law enforcement has become a pertinent issue. Notably, the underrepresentation of minorities within law enforcement influences the relationship between communities and law enforcement by engendering distrust with law enforcement. To say nothing of, underrepresentation of minorities have had many people question whether departments mirror a diverse community. Nevertheless, with that being said, underrepresentation of minorities have generated tension and distrust between communities and law enforcement and many believe that police department need to mirror the race composition within their cities. Although some people may challenge that diversifying police officers will not make a difference in the relationship with communities, police departments mirroring the diversity of communities may mend tension.
Discrimination in police agencies is a big problem in this country. This discrimination comes in different forms and names. The three mains types are Institutionalized discrimination, Contextual discrimination, and Individual acts of discrimination. These patterns of discrimination can occur because that’s the way it has always has been done or because of the situation. Ethnic groups pose problems for police agencies including language barriers and their prior contacts with law enforcement. Gang involvement and the location a person lives can also lead to discrimination. Illegal immigrants pose a different type of problem for law enforcement. Because they do not want to be deported, most times they
There are many concerns for a working police officer in America. Officers can face several types of dangers while on duty. Most of the time when police officers sign up for their job they already have prior knowledge of the risk they may be taking. They represent the civil authority of the government. According to Rose Johnson, "The job of a police officer is risky, and officers incur a higher rate of illnesses and injury than the national average for other jobs. Officers spend a great deal of time working with criminals and dealing with threatening scenarios". Although officers in America face several types of dangers, it does not give the officer the right to engage in unlawful acts. Police officers who receive more education and training will more than likely interact with different minorities through his/her institution. Officers should be more diverse because they will not be very biased and it could help end the problem with racial profiling. Police officers should be randomly drug tested for the safety of the citizens.
The issue of race within the police force dates back to the 1967 President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice, which considered the lack of minority officers one of the central problems in policing at that time. Almost 50 years later and
There is prescription that a company could apply to be successful, therefore it depends on the capability of the leader to sort out what is best to the organisation based on the level of productivity of the workplace. Leaders and managers should know and recognise skills that are vital in creating a positive and effective diverse workforce. One day session of training and programs is inadequate to change a person’s behaviour and styles, therefore the company need continuous development, implementation and maintaining trainings and awareness foundation.
“To What Extent does Police Occupational Culture Impact on the Social and Domestic live of Police Officers?” Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review. (2013): 229-247. Google Scholarly. Web. 14 Oct. 2015.
Police officers have vowed their life to protect and serve. They risk their lives every day for their communities. As the last few years have sped past us, police officers have been very aggressive with the force they use when arresting a suspect, or even people in general. According to a Texas article on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, “police officers typically use force offensively rather than defensively and do so with at least some degree of premeditation.” (Gross,2013, page 167). Many police officers get off easily because they call it as self-defense, but it’s not. People being brutally beaten or killed, riots breaking out, mourning of neighborhoods, lawsuits against police departments all can be at stake of police officers using excessive force. This is part of the reason our country has been in an uproar. In the last few years’ police brutality has been at an all-time high. Because of it, movements have been started and protests have broken out. As most should know there has been a split in the diversity of the nation because of it.
With this, it’s why it’s vital, today, to introduce new strategies and tactics, of ‘good police practice’, to resolve disputes and offer & engage with a more positive relationship between Indigenous people and the Australian Police Force and to also show equity and integrity to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups within
Due to the recent finding of police brutality, most cases involved a white male police officer using force against a person of color. History will lead us to believe that race of an officer will be the number one contributing factor in the use of excessive force. As I stated above, in recent cases it has been a white male using force against a person of color. However, studying some research studies, it has shown that the no matter what the race is of the officer, it has no causal effect on the use of excessive force. What I mean by this is not all cases dealing with excessive force involves race. In addition, in a study about Widening the scope on complaints of police misconduct. Policing, “not all excessive force cases consist of a white
Racial profiling and police brutality has become a very common issue in the United States. This is a problematic issue and has become a very controversial topic. It has raised the question are law enforcement officers receiving the appropriate training to do their job. To become a police officer, you are not required to receive a college degree in Criminal Justice. The amount of training the police officers receive depends on the agency requirements. Many people have started to question about having law enforcement officers in the field that have no prior knowledge of the law or law enforcement experience. Many people feel that this has started to create dangerous situations. This is because even though they have been through a training with
Police departments face increasing criticism from protesters, the media, and the federal government. Many negative personal encounters and officer-involved shootings have stimulated arguments about American law enforcement. These officer involved shootings have caused racial issues across the country. Is reform necessary? With approximately 18,000 police agencies operating in the United States, is reform even possible? I conducted a survey with both black and white respondents. The survey includes demographic information and a few questions that ties together the respondents demographic information and their thoughts of the police. In addition, I will discuss innovative strategies to improve the relationship between police and people
To begin with, Indigenous Liaison Officers aim to promote a consciousness of the roles that NSW police have within Aboriginal Communities. To ensure communication between Aboriginal People and the NSW Police is not hindered in some way, the Liaison Officers will identify such obstacles and find ways to prevent their occurrence. While doing this the Liaison Officers maintain a fostered mutual understanding between First Nation People and the Police. A key factor in the success of the Liaison Officer initiative is that the Officers apply encouraging attitudes and demonstrate that they can adapt with their use of spoken and body language when in contact with different people. This allows the Officers to encourage Aboriginal people to communicate to Police any matter related to crime within the Aboriginal community. In addition to this the Officers inspire Aboriginal communities to work with Police in evolving plans that overcome Aboriginal Peoples disadvantage as it relates to a policing setting (NSW Police Force, 2007, p. 2). Therefore the implementation of Indigenous Liaison Officers has been effective as it improves relations between the NSW Police and Indigenous
In this week’s module one content. I learned that there should always be police integrity and community trust. “With police and community trust, there is an honored relationship between citizens and a government agency.” (Community Trust and Police Integrity, p.7-16) Secondly, police officers must be trusted to behave in an ethical way on their own. “When a terrible crime has occurred, the public may demand that the police solve it ‘no matter what they have to do,’ and so there is pressure to use unnecessary force” (Wilson, Police Ethics). Finally, police officers should always have a positive response to a negative incident. “They can learn from incidents of police misconduct and take steps to correct the policies and practices that allow misconduct to occur.” (Walker, Policing the Police).
