Culture is defined as “a relating to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a society” , while the clashing of two cultures through trade relations or music, literature and the exchange of experiences is called the cultural encounters or in another definition “it is the occurrence of two or more cultures coming into contact with each through conquest immigration , mass media , trade or travel “), so in this essay I am going to focus on the cultural encounter in a certain story which is called the “ out of many “ by V.S Naipaul . there is more than one type of the cultural encounter such as cooperative encounter which preserves the rights and the benefits for each culture, also we have the competitive encounter which is overriding …show more content…
and every type of the cultural encounter has an effect on society and people, whether it was a negative effect or a positive effect. So cultural encounters specially for immigration for whatever reason has some conflicts, yes it gave them a chance to have home and safe life provided with security and stability, education and jobs opportunity, but they have to adapt to a new language new believes new way of thinking and a whole new life style in the host community which is difficult for them. In addition, some short stories had an idea about cultural encounters and it was very clear such as “Ultimate safari “, “Pit strike” and the story that I am going to discuss the cultural encounter in it “one out of many “and many others.
The “Out of many “story lists an innocent Indian man his name is Santosh who decided to immigrate to Washington with his employer, he left his wife and children back there in Bombay, and tries to identify himself in a picture of a perfect society because he saw himself as a representation of his country, though he insist on his employer to take him later, he regrets going to Washington ,although he was so excited to immigrate he found it hard to live with new community with a different culture , believes , manners , even appearance , so when he was on the plane his innocence with dressing
America is the “melting pot” country where immigrants from various countries around the world come here and settle. They come here either for economy, political, education or medical reason. When they migrate here they bring with them their culture, religious, value and belief which makes America more diverse and interest. Yet, at the same time it often leads to two cultures collision. Cultural shock is unavoidable for almost newcomer refugee people.
Culture plays a significant vital part in proceeding the values, standards and norms of a society. It additionally offers lots of opportunities for individuals to be creative. These inventive individuals turn into a social subgroup outside the overwhelming center of society and are then known as a subculture. “A civilization [culture] is not only a system of values, but also a word of forms and codes of behavior, rules and expectations. It is society’s visible side- institutions, monuments, works, things - but it is especially its submerged, invisible side: beliefs, desires, fears, repressions, dreams” (Paz 1994f: 395).
Immigrants face many diffuculties from when they come to the country, raise children and cultural
Immigrants usually go through phases when it comes to migrating to a new country and this essay was an attempt to outline those phases with an emphasis on the negative effects of assimilation. Firstly, isolation. Nearly every immigrant finds themselves isolated at first, but this tends to go away as they become assimilated with the new culture. As this happens, they start to lose touch with their cultural identity and start to change in order to fit in with the new culture. Sometimes this is forced, other times the immigrant knowingly assimilates.
Immigration conundrum will never be felt as acutely by second generation immigrants because things change and people forget about the right way it is awfully to think roots can and should be so easily discarded. I prefer Jhumpa Lahiri's narrative voice over Smith’s no inflection of moral no pronouncing of judgement on flawed choices but a restrained attempt at humanizing all characters. I feel this is something that happened to most people because some people have like family things they do and as people get older and others don’t do what has always been done or the new person that takes over forget it or does do it right. Also with religion people have a different outlook than someone else and each people will take it different and to me
Migrating to a new country is often a daunting task. Often people migrate in search of a better life, others for work and others are moved by force. Nevertheless migrating from one land to another land often leads this people into forming a minority. In the past these minority groups have often been treated with a poor in sense of social inclusion. However the rise of multiculturalism has forced the assimilations of many different cultures.
However, his theory and most of the previous research focus on mainly immigrants’ acculturation. Considering that there are also other groups such as sojourners and expatriates, Berry’s theory and other acculturation theories may not totally apply to the groups apart from immigrants. (Lian & Tsang , 2010). Furthermore, acculturation is usually referred as an adjustment and adaptation process of cultural change as the final outcome (Adler and Gielen (2003). For this reason, the extensive body of research in the expatriation literature has focused on cross-cultural adjustment process of individuals and minority groups in response to their contact with the dominant majority and it constitutes the central conceptual framework of this
Nevertheless, when immigrating to the U.S. many newcomers find themselves lost the vastness of the contemporary culture this is known as culture shock. Since most people move to the U.S. from developing countries they are not used to the freedoms that America offers. An instance of this is when the speaker of the presentation came emigrated from Israel. At first inclination he found himself enthralled by the independence of Americans. Ironically, he soon became astray when traversing through the subway system.
Bharati Mukherjee wrote an essay called, “Two Ways to Belong in America,” as a response to Congress after they started discussing to take away government benefits from immigrants. In it she discusses her experience of being an immigrant and becoming a citizen to her sister, who chose not to become a citizen. Mukherjee wrote: “The price that the immigrant willingly pays, and that the exile avoids, is the trauma of self-transformation.” This statement is accurate for many reasons, one of which being culture shock. The “trauma of self-transformation” indicates that immigrants, both those who become citizens and those who do not, has to go challenges and transformations when they go to a different country that are not always easy and/or pleasant.
Piedad Molina Professor Ana Hernandez LIT 2480 October 7, 2015 Culture is the set of traditions, beliefs, and values, which are characteristic of a certain population. Each country or region has different parameters to determine their culture. The predominant values in the population, the language spoken, religious beliefs, and the way they dress; all these manners influence in the creation of a culture and what is autonomous of its region. Within a country we can find different cultures or ethnicities, social status, education and region make a population differ from another. The exchange of cultural ideas, beliefs, and values with the youngest members of the community make it possible for a culture to survive and to keep the legacy.
Only an author of experience could include culture in every description of a man. The author’s purpose was not easily delivered and was challenging to understand as a reader. After thinking a while, it was realized that the author had several purposes in mind. The main one was to show an aspect of the human condition.
culture has an vast impact on how we see the world but it's not the only factor, society and what it taught you about the world changes your view on the world drastically. In the story “Two ways to Belong to America” by Bharati Mukherjee, Bharati and her sister move to america. “I am an American citizen and she is not, i am moved that thousands of long-term residents are finally taking oath of citizenship, She is not”. In this example Bharati has taken hold of the American culture so she sees people coming and taking the oath of citizenship as a celebratory merry occasion .
Life Changing Positions Immigration can be a controversial topic that many governments are feuding over today. As politicians argue, the real battle occurs as each individual immigrant determines how they will approach their new country. Immigrants must choose if they will assimilate to the new countries values, languages and traditions or maintain their home country’s customs. In the article, “Two Ways To Belong In America,” the author, Bharati Mukherjee, contrasts her and her sister Mira’s experiences along with millions of other American immigrants as they face betrayal, racism, and hardship.
Acculturation could be understood as the process of cultural and psychological change that results following interaction between cultures. This effect of this interaction happens on the group and individual level. According to Berry (2005), “At the group level, it involves changes in social structures and institutions and in cultural practices. At the individual level, it involves changes in a person’s behavioral repertoire” (p. 698-699). The cultural and psychological result of acculturation is a long-term process, and requires some level of adaptation between the cultured groups.
A reading of his book is more than demanding knowledge in the field of cultural studies. His study is often beyond reach and aims of many of those who would deploy the notion of social capital. Fourthly, as cultural theorists, he exceptionally determined to pass through a path between what
