The Social and Cultural Implications of Internet to our Society During the start of the Internet in 1981, it received numerous criticisms in terms of its role in the growth and well being of our society. It was praised and at the same time, criticized all throughout its evolution. The Internet during our time today serves as a new technology that is said to make our lives easier and helps the society achieve better understanding on things. Society adores it. It can make a lot of factors such as, freedom of speech, commerce, connectivity, communication, and other societal benefits reachable for everyone. However, there are also implications on to which the Internet is harmful. Disadvantages of Internet to Society a) Communication The Internet provides a wide access for means of communication such as online networking sites, e-mails, social media, etc. It makes communicating faster and convenient for people. But with everything working so fast, even the simplest problems can be seen. Language play a huge part in communication. With this, short forms of different words are seen, and as time goes by, people will be used to it. b) Access to Information c) Privacy With the popularity of social networking sites, Bobby Coles states that, "The Internet strips people of their basic privacy, showing the world more than should be shared." (Coles, 2012) He argues that people tend to expose more information which will cause their personal information to be open for anyone to see.
