We cannot translate one's thought which is affected by and stated in language specific for a certain community to another different language because the system of thought in the two languages (cultures) must be different. A clue to the new sense in which the term translation is here being used is suggested by a remark made by Rushdie himself (which Bhabha incidentally does not cite) in which he said of himself and other diasporic postcolonial writers: “we are translated men” (Rushdie 16). Rushdie was here exploiting the etymology of the word “translation,” which means to carry or bear across, and what he meant, therefore, was that because he had been borne across, presumably by an aeroplane, from India and Pakistan to the United Kingdom, he was therefore a translated man. He neglected to tell us as to whether, before he became a translated man, he was at any stage also an original man.But a second and overriding sense in which too Rushdie claimed to be a translated man is precisely what is expounded by HomiBhabha in his essay, with specific reference to The Satanic Verses.
I choose that this was an example of a radical translation for a number of separate reasosn. My first reason behind why I chose to classify it as this type of translation is because the movie changes the interpretation of the book, as defined in the definition of "radical translation. " In the movie we first meet our main character Lenny, in his hotel room rather than in his hospital room like we do in the book. This difference does not allow us to see where Lenny has started but instead brings us to the main point in the movie where he is already searching for the man who killed his wife.
In “The Foreign Travels of Sir John Mandeville,” John Mandeville provides an account of his travels by creating an imaginative geography of the people and places he visits. Through this imaginative geography the idea of the Western “self” is explored by highlighting the differences between “self,” and the “other” – the peoples of civilizations Mandeville visits. It is in this way that the Western identity is formed – it is not concerned with what Western civilization is but more, what it is not. This dichotomy between self and other is explored in Mandeville’s writing in several capacities, specifically: the civilized human and the savage animals, the pious Christians and the uncivilized pagans, and the good and the evil.
Cultural relativism is the understanding of other cultures in their own terms. To achieve the understanding of the rituals used in the cultures of another, one must be able to look at them from an emic (insider) perspective. One must also be able to look at his own culture from an etic (outsider) perspective. The ability to look at one’s culture from the etic point of view will make it easier to explain the rituals to someone from a different culture, for example, rites of passage. Rites of passage are used to mark a life stage and are celebrated by tradition or religion, meant to separate a specific group.
We’re constantly being influences by our surrounding. Usually, our parent’s cultural background plays a significant part in shaping who we are. On the other hand, co-cultures also promote their own set of values which could easily shape our ideas about certain matters as well. These components are a part of how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive too. Growing in a Mexican household allowed me to be exposed to more family orientated events that included music, food and dancing.

During this semester, I gained a lot of skills and knowledge about interpersonal relations. As a human being, as a member of the "global village", everyone need to communicate with others. It is important to learn how to communicate well and how to build a healthy and positive interpersonal relationship with others. Like the textbook’ name “Looking Out Looking In”, we looked in the communication itself, looked out the language barrier, nonverbal messages and effective listening, and looked at relational dynamics. I learned and recognized about how environmental factors can impact our communication.

Haroun and the Sea of Stories, written by Salman Rushdie, tells the tale of a young boy named Haroun, who goes on a quest to restore balance to strange realms, due to his father’s lack of storytelling abilities, and on this journey he discovers several impurities within this alternate world, as well as similar issues presented in his own world. Salman Rushdie has experienced criticisms for his novels, most notably from the Muslim community, who believed his works were depicting Muslim cultural beliefs in a negative manner, which led to belligerent extremist-guerilla groups of Iran to seek his capture, sentencing Rushdie to sacrilegious treason. Regardless of the charges sent to him, Rushdie continues to write allegorical commentaries about his experiences with the Iranian government and how citizens are treated, particularly women and journalists, which is seen especially in his work Haroun and the Sea of Stories. Salman Rushdie expresses his political output through the censoring of Mudra’s communication through sign language, the methodical schemes of Khattam-Shud to achieve world dominance, and Blabbermouth’s inability to be accepted into the war as a female. Mudra, the Shadow Warrior is subjected to a form of sign language known as Abhinaya, which hinders his ability to communicate, as a result of the harsh law mandated by Khattum-Shud.
