A curandera is a traditional native healer or shaman in Mexico. The role of the curandera is somewhat like a doctor to the people of the pueblo communities.
People love to label themselves. From personality quizzes to AA meetings, many long for acceptance within a group filled with people like themselves. Yet, arguably, the most important label for many is their heritage. In her essay “Cultural Baggage,” author Barbara Ehrenreich discusses her relation to her identity and society's obsession with culture, questioning why people find clearly defined culture as so important and crucial to the human experience. Beginning in her childhood, Ehrenreich details her desire to understand and find meaning in her life, which largely stems from the absence of any distinct and unique culture .

A Curandera is a Native healer, usually found in the United States and Mexico who uses folk remedies and herbs to heal. Curandera comes from the Latin word curar, which means to cure. Her role in the community consisted of helping others who truly need and deserve her help and the giving of her guidance to the ones who need it most.
Ultima is one of the main characters and she is said to be a bruja (a witch in spanish), or one who does and practices witchcraft. "Ultima is able to lift the curses of the witches and also destroy spells of fellow brujas." (7) Also, the man who killed the sheriff known as Lupito had turned into an animal and he disappeared in the mud. Magical realism are the things in life that don’t seem real but in this book there is a lot of it magical realism is almost like magic.
The Spirit of the Llano Magical realism is when magical elements or illogical scenarios appear in an otherwise realistic or normal setting. In Bless Me, Ultima there are many elements of magical realism which occur in the sacred town Tony Marez spends his childhood in. Tony is the character Rudolfo Anaya uses to share personal experience he had as a child. From start to finish, the story consistently portrays imagery and personification to give the land of New Mexico a life of its own. Tony describes his magical experience when he first meets Ultima as “her eyes swept the surrounding hills and through them he saw for the first time the wild beauty of their hills and the magic of the green river.

The culture in the Odyssey was defined by the individuals who lived in it, unlike today's culture where people change who they are to fit in with today’s society. The human communities in the Odyssey wanted to keep peace with the gods and one another. The people thereby depended on leaders and kings who had the wisdom and experience to guide them, such as Odysseus or his father, Laerte. The decisions were made by the majority, those people who held higher rank in the community had more pull in the decision making process, however this system worked against those people who had yet to gain respect in the community. For example, younger men, like Telemachus, had this disadvantage.

The first thing I think when talking about my family’s culture is farming and living in the country. I also start to think about where our ancestors came from and why they decided to come to America. Another thing that comes to mind is the morals my family believes in that our culture affect. Everything that comes to my mind is something that involves communication and is a huge part of my family. But after reading Chapter 3 I have learned that there is a lot to our culture than where we live or where we came from.
INTRODUCTION In everyday usage, the word culture refers to a desirable quality we can acquire by attending a sufficient number of plays and concerts and trudging through several miles of art galleries. The anthropologist , however has a different definition as Ralph Linton explains culture refers to the total way of life of any society regards as higher or more desirable. Thus, culture when applied to our own way of life, has nothing to do with playing the piano or reading Browning. For the social scientist such activities are simply elements within the totality of our culture.
