Introduction Professionals who are experts in their fields write peer-reviewed articles or scholarly articles based on the research they have done in the field of their expertise.
The first article being compared is “Reflection Revisited: The Class Collage” written by Jeff Sommers from the Journal of Basic Writing. This scholarly article is about a college English professor who gives an assignment to his class about reflection. As the assignment progresses, he quickly realizes that the responses he had received from his students were not what he had imagined. The second article is called “Advertising to Children and Teens: Current Practices” written by Victoria Rideout and published by Common Sense Media. This scholarly article talks about

Each article has different ways to support the goals of the discourse community it belongs in. Different discourses have different goals as well as different ways to achieve each goal. For example a medical discourse is responsible for helping people where as a community of chef’s main priority is making good food. The “Advertising to Children and Teens: Current Practices” article contain a lot of citations and numbers. The business field is more number and data based so it is only right that this article is no different. Each section of the article contains at least one eyewitness reference supporting the section’s topic. For example, there is a section in the article about branded websites and the supporting data are from big name companies such as Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and McDonalds just to name a few. Bullet points are also spotted to name off lists within the sections. These bullets are used to further support the claims being made within the scholarly article. This article uses multiple sources of information and raw data to get its point across, which means this, is how the marketing/advertisement discourse achieves their …show more content…
This article mostly uses first hand knowledge and experiences by the author and his students to slowly get his point across. Only mentioning names when needing to, Sommers also briefly includes bits from multiple students’ reflection papers. This is most notably shown using block citation. Bullet points are used in this article just as much as the other. They are used in the same way with their purpose being to name off lists that the author uses to support their claim. The goal of the English discourse for this particular article is to show other professionals in the English field what Sommers has found. He also encourages others to try out his reflection assignment as indicated in his “What now”
Nowadays, it seems to be that the news and marketing define what is and what isn’t. They control everything that we see, when we see it and whether or not we like what we see. This is the power of the media. In the essay “Commodifying Kids: The Forgotten Crisis,” Henry Giroux goes into depth on this subject. More specifically, he talks about media in regards to the kid’s market.
Based on the findings stated above, it is clear that because children view advertisements at such a young age, they are greatly influenced. The way that advertisers manipulate children affects how they buy products and how they feel about those products. Not only do they buy into consumer culture, they also buy based on their emotions. As they get older, a child will find validation through their obsession with materialism and continue to consume in order to feel justified. The validation that one gets from excessive materialism is detrimental to a person’s growth in numerous ways.
As young teenagers unintentionally become a victim of ad story created by advertisers, the influence of gender stereotype in product advertising results young teenagers in buying expensive things they don’t need, imitating an inappropriate behavior from good looking models, and facing health problems in their bodies. These three issues become an ongoing
ENG-122 Reflective Essay My writing process has changed tremendously over the course of this class. I feel more accomplished, confident and I feel sometimes that my ideas and thoughts just come in to my mind out of nowhere and I start writing about anything now. I pay attention to my punctuation and grammar more as I have polished them more now, not only when I write but then others write as well. I am constantly looking for errors and I highly think this is helping me a lot in my career.
Gardner. Session1.Journal Fyre Gardner Student ID #0488649 Session 1 Writing Assessment Introduction In this reflection journal, I will be describing an event and experience in my life that will influence my academic work and goals at Colorado Christian University. I will incorporate some of the use of critical reflection and the questions relating to what I am learning in my heart, hand, and head.
Description Reflection is a necessary component in learning to regulate opinion, feelings, and actions. Reflection links experience and knowledge by providing an opportunity to explore areas of concern in a critical way and to make adjustments based on these reflections (Knowles Z., Tyler G., 2006). I will be using the Gibbs G (1988) Learning by Doing: A guide to teaching and learning methods (Davies S., 2012).
In order to structure my reflection essay in a practical approach I have decided to use Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988) model of reflection. This model has been selected as it helps to present the reflection in an easy and understandable manner, so the issues can be evaluated through different angles (Jasper, 2003:78). John 's (1995) model provides a good

Reflection can been described as a process of turning experience into learning, that is, it is a way of exploring experience in order to learn new things from it. Accrding to Boud, eogh, and Walker (1985:19) define reflection as “those intellectual and affective activities in which are engaged in by individuals to explore their experiences in order to lead to new understandings and appreciations”. Reflection often involves taking the unprocessed, raw material of one’s experience and engaging with it Inorder to derive sense from what has occurred. It often involves exploring messy and confused events and focusing on the thoughts and emotions that accompany them. Reflection can be undertaken as an informal personal activity either for its own sake or as a part of a structured course.
Introduction: Today, many young women are faced with the dreadful pressure imposed by the unregulated modeling and advertising industries that are promoting unrealistic body images. Our society is swamped with images of the “perfect body”, with the use of Photoshop and ultra-thin female models, to which many teenagers want to conform to. Because of the urge to reach the unachievable body stereotype, more regulations of the modeling and advertising industry should therefore be made, in order to protect the most vulnerable teenagers, affected both psychologically and physically. Freedom of speech and expression Although it is fair to believe that the modeling and advertising industry possibly harm many teenagers’ physical and psychological
While reflecting with my grade level team, we share successes, challenges, and ideas for improvements. After reading the lecture on reflection my understanding of reflection was expanded, and I was able to identify strengths and weaknesses in my reflective practices. Although I was familiar with the importance of reflection in teaching, the lecture helped me to understand why reflection is important for all professionals. I learned that reflection is important in any profession where there are situations that arise that do not have one “right” solution.
Reflective teaching - a development of future action from the reflection of past and current behavior Introduction In the past ten years, the terms `reflection ' and `critical reflection ' have increasingly appeared in descriptions of approaches to teacher education. The concept of reflective practice has found wide application in the field of education, for learners, teachers and those who teach teachers. Reflection is the key to successful learning for teachers and for learners. The origins of the “reflective teaching” concept are explored.
It was considered as a heterogeneous approach which involves deliberation of ideas and collaborative effort. It is quite motivating to ponder over that this emerging trend, reflection teaching has gained stimulant over the years in ELT and has immensely contributed in the field of education. In this connection Farrell (2004) states: Teachers can become more empowered decision makers, engaging in systematic reflections of their work by thinking, writing, and talking about their teaching; observing the acts of their own and others’ teaching; and by gauging the impact of their teaching on their students’ learning. In these ways, teachers can begin to locate themselves within their profession and start to take more responsibility for shaping their practice.
