In our modern society, technology is an inevitable part of most people’s lives across the world. More and more workplaces require their employees to embrace different pieces of machinery in their job. People tend to adapt to innovative technologies quickly and look for better alternatives to make not only their work but also everyday lives easier and more entertaining. It has been happening due to realization that pretending that you are someone else or being anonymous is easier than ever before. Anonymity makes people feel more powerful and give them several ways to bully others without revealing their real personalities. In August 2017 US Department of Health and Human Services made a research on cyber bullying in high schools across the United States. Results revealed that fifty two percent of respondents are bullied online and the largest part of bullying happens on Facebook which is the most popular social network in the world. Mean messages and threats are the most frequent ways of bullying between young people. Research also indicated that girls are more likely to be victims of bullying on social media networks than boys. More than half on bullied students feel hopeless so they do not tell anyone when cyber bullying occurs and stay quiet about their problems. Even though many people try to ignore bullies and stay strong, cyber bullying often lead them to very serious mental issues such as anxiety, insomnia or depression and can also have a long-term damage on teenagers’ self-esteem. Cyber bullying victims are two to nine times more likely to commit suicide than people who do not experience bullying on the internet. There have been two unfortunate suicidal cases in recent years due to cyber bullying: one victim jumped off a cement factory tower with the one shot himself in the chest. A group of Dutch researchers decided to study the relationship between the bullying and the suicides. From 34 studies that shared close resemblance to the issue, they concluded that the children that were being cyber bullied was 3.12 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts, compared to children that were had never been bullied before.
