The title Dalai Lama is given to a chief monk and ruler of Tibet. Dalai Lamas are called to be a reincarnation of the deity, Avalokitesvara. Avalokitesvara, a Buddhist deity, is personified as compassion. Also, Dalai Lamas are called to be enlightened beings who have been reborn to benefit humanity. The word “Dalai Lama” means “Ocean Teacher,” which is meant as a teacher who is spiritually as deep as an ocean. Lhamo Dondrub, who is currently the 14th Dalai Lama, was born on July 6, 1935 in Taktser, China. Lhamo was the fifth of 16 in his family and seven in which died at a young age. Born into a farming family, Lhamo was soon acknowledged as a reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso at the age of 2. At the age of 4, he was declared …show more content…

At the age of 6, Tenzin started his religious lessons. These religious lessons included logic, Tibetan art and culture, Sanskrit, medicine and Buddhist philosophy. At the age of 15, Tenzin had full political power as the 14th Dalai Lama. In 1950, China invaded Tibet with over eighty-thousand men to try to conquer the country. The Dalai Lama met with the leaders of China to negotiate peace treaties, but he was denied by the leaders. Finally in 1959, the Dalai Lama was exiled to India. In 1963, the Dalai Lama completed a draft of the constitution for Tibet that contained several reforms to democratize the government. The draft was called the Charter of the Tibetans in Exile and it granted freedom of speech, belief, assembly, and movement. In 1987, the Dalai Lama proposed the Five Point Peace Plan for Tibet in a peaceful solution to conform with the Chinese government and end the situation there. The plan introduced an idea that Tibet would become a sanctuary where people could live in peace and where the environment is preserved.
