The instructor and students were Sri Lankan, and the class was taught in Sinhalese, my first language. We danced to traditional songs, and I felt connected to my family and ancestors in Sri Lanka. However, when I entered high school, the only dance class available was a combination of traditional American dances: jazz, ballet and tap. I enrolled in this class, where I was the only Sri Lankan. Over the school year, I began to realize that all types of dance are a form of expression that tell stories and communicate feelings.
In my dance classes, I have been able to improve upon my body placement and proper alignment. With the help of my instructors, I am able to work towards improving elements I have always struggled with, such as balance. Even outside of class, like auditioning for Mesa 's dance concert, I have found that the structure and organization of these auditions has helped prepare me for audition processes in the real world. Picking up and retaining choreography quickly is something I tend to struggle with, but these auditions give me the practice necessary to perform to my greatest ability and figure out methods to be on top of my game. Dance is like therapy to me, and after a long day of work or other classes, it feels comforting to have my dance classes as an outlet to express myself and exert my energy into something positive.
I told myself everyday to forget about the pain and work hard to make the competition performance great. I didn’t want to spend another year standing on the sidelines of I could be perform with the team. My wrist hurt terribly, but I performed to the best of my ability. The competition went great, and I didn’t feel the pain until after our two minute routine was over. Cheerleading has shown me that my determination, attitude and effort help me accomplish great adventures in life.

I was responsible in guiding members and helping them understand choreography. Being a positive role model to help guard members that struggled with unfamiliar moves was challenging, as I worked to stay patient with an outgoing personality. As I watched the guard practice, I became aware that each individual learns differently, however, their problems showed similarities. Members’ eyes were wandering, comparing themselves to each other. Frustrations filled their faces as members doubted their ability to execute the choreography.
The coaches push you to your limits so you can achieve your goal. If you are not doing the drill that you are supposed to be doing the whole team will have to do more conditioning. Conditioning is like exercising, but a little harder. Cheerleading is hard. Cheerleading is a fun sport though at certain times.
Coming into Choreography I did not have any professional dancing experience, I just danced to the rhythm of my soul and with everything choreographed spaced study I put my soul into it, as I began learning the art behind what I did. Through dancing I was able to share my reality with my peers and tell them story of my life without with just my body language. Each week my choreographic process evolved by being introduced to new topics such as floor pattern, motif, and putting meaning behind what I do, and learning everything does not have to make sense. Elements such as motif and daydreaming helped construct my final project. I envisioned how I wanted my final project to before I began to develop it.
So I listed every skill I learned in my years of dance. After filling them out we got in a space so we could stretch. After stretching from a high school dancer from the coaches varsity dance team. We started to learn the dance, the dance was a little hard but it’s supposed to be hard, because it’s the dance prep team. We practiced so many times I kept messing up this one part, we were put in partnerships.
To stay motivated I like to set very high goals for myself, and all of my objectives are more than what I need to achieve. For example, I have a current goal of being on the President’s Honor Roll, and to achieve that, I need to maintain all A grades in the semester. Dancing is another example of how I can be an overachiever. Ever since I first started ballet, I have always studied through the Royal Academy of Dance methods, and at the end of every year, a dance instructor from London would come to Brazil to evaluate each student, and give us a grade that would decide if we can move on to the next level. On evaluation day, all of the students had to wear matching black leotards, and perform the same combos and skills.

Structure is a very important and vital skill for children to be taught. A great way to introduce some structure in their lives is by giving them participation trophies for them trying and participating in whatever sport it may be. At their age, this is beneficial. Any sort of trophy will expose and introduce them to the fact that if they participate, they will be rewarded for doing so. If these kids do not learn this type of basic structure at this young age, it will be very hard for them to grasp the concept of it later in life.

When something doesn’t make sense to me or isn’t working for me, I know to analyze all components of the issue and figure out how I can take a different approach in order to reach a solution. I want to be dedicated to every task I have and succeed in learning something I am passionate about. I know that I will encounter challenging situations, and just like in ballet, I have to remember that it takes a tremendous amount of dedication and drive to work through it. Even though I am quite shy, I don’t want to stay that way; I want to be brave enough to know what I must do in order to be successful. Ballet taught me that working with others is important because it allows me to complete a task much faster than if I try to do something on my own.
