Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin when the skin becomes dry, red, scaly, flaky, itchy, and can be blistered. The skin becomes hard, thickened and cracked, swelled, especially in the eyes, face, or groin areas. Skin can appear darkened or leathery, extreme itching and sun sensitive.
What’s your thought on tanning? Do you think tanning in a salon isn’t harmful? Do you think tanning outside is more harmful. Tanning indoors or even tanning outdoors is very harmful to you. With outdoor tanning you can prevent the intake of UVB and UVA rays by properly using sunblock but in tanning beds you cannot. Tanning beds should be called coffins. Tanning beds emit more UVA rays and the longer UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper. They also break down collage and elastic tissue and this causes rapid aging of the skin. You may think you look good when you are tan but you certainly won’t when you skin become very wriggled and saggy. The shorter UVB rays cannot reach this deep but they can cause mutation in DNA of skin cells in the higher
First let’s explain what Ultra violet radiation is. Ultraviolet radiation definition is radiation in the part of the electromagnetic spectrum where wavelengths are just shorter than those of ordinary, visible violet light but longer than those of x-rays. In other words it’s dangerous to play with. It is unstable molecules known as reactive oxygen species. (Source: Journal of Aesthetic Nursing (J AESTHETIC NURS), Jul/Aug2015; 4(6): 276-280. 5p) Lorna Bowes, who is an Aesthetic Nurse and Director, Aesthetic Source, Bedford, explains in her article that long exposure to UVR (ultra violet radiation) will cause an increase in age due to the damage on the skin from the radiation and could eventually lead to skin cancer. Even on a cloudy day the over 80% of the sun’s rays penetrates the clouds and continue to damage your skin and when that sun light hits the surface, it will increase the power
Tanning has become very popular in today’s society. Tanned skin has become known as healthy and beautiful, when in reality tanned skin is damaged skin. Many teens start the habit of indoor tanning when preparing for a school dance or maybe another special occasion, and then they just continue to go afterwards. Indoor tanning equipment, which includes all artificial light sources, including beds, lamps, bulbs, booths, etc., emits UVA and UVB radiation. The amount of the radiation produced during indoor tanning is similar to the sun, and in some cases might be stronger than the sun ("Indoor Tanning”). There are approximately 14,000 tanning salons across the country as of early 2014, and they all have gotten very good at justifying the risky behaviors tanning beds possess. (Tavernise). There are many risks that teens take when they tan on a regular basis, therefore, tanning should be banned for minors because of the risk of developing skin cancer, the addiction it might bring on to the teens, damage it does to the skin and the cost of indoor tanning.
Yet, they are not and possess hidden dangers. A former employee of a tanning salon said this about the conditions of the tanning beds,"I've seen water dripping down on beds, people leaving beds dirty and calling it a night. I go in there to tan, look up...got handprints everywhere,". Doctors and dermatologists say any bacteria can be picked up from a tanning bed. Dirty tanning beds are a great place for bacteria and viruses to grow (WMBF News, 2014). They say that because as the body sweats it creates moisture and the lights help create the moist environment that the bacteria can live in (Gander, K. 2015). Some diseases that are found in tanning beds are athlete's foot, lice, jock itch, staph infections, herpes, warts, faecal bacteria, and more (WMBF News, 2014). A common symptom of unsanitary conditions is ‘tanning bed rash’. The tanning itself dries out the skin causing a rash, but it is most likely from the dried sweat of the last tanner (Arizona Dermatology, 2018). Although not visible to the eye, tanning beds are not as sanitary as they may look, and can carry many
This paper will be discussing the topic of TANF. I will discuss the pros and the cons of TANF and how it effects society. TANF is a cash assistance program for poor families with dependent children. It’s predecessor, the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program was part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Social Security Act of 1935.
According to Miner, “Women bake their heads in small ovens for about an hour” (505). The student of this article thought up an oddly similar practice that both women and men of North American society do willingly, visit tanning salons. The men and women who go to tanning salons willingly lay inside of what is seemingly an oven lined with ultraviolet lights. Never had it ever come to the students attention as to how weird of a practice that is until he read the quote mentioned previously in this paragraph. There are obvious health risks when assuming position inside of what is essentially an oven lined with ultraviolet lights. One health risk being overexposure to ultraviolet light, greatly increase the possibility of being diagnosed with skin cancer. Yet, the North American society is willing to “look good” at the cost of potentially dying of a skin related disease. In this case, the people of North America are showing the same ignorance as the women of the Nacirema people who bake their heads in small ovens for roughly an
Attention Getter: There is an unexplained increase in skin cancer among people under the age of forty. 30 million people visit an indoor facility each year according to the indoor tanning association. That is 10 percent of the U.S. population voluntarily exposing themselves to UV radiation which causes cancer. UV radiation is a form of energy from natural and artificial sunlight. Excess amounts can cause damage to DNA in the skin. Although some argue tanning is good for you because it helps form a “base tan” and the UV exposure time is controlled. The truth is, each time you lay in a tanning bed, it increases the risk of developing skin cancer
Although it may seem that it is common knowledge that UV tanning beds are harmful to the human body, 7.8 million adult women and 1.9 million adult men in the United States still tan indoors. Thirty-five percent of American adults, 59 percent of college students, and 17 percent of teens have reported using a tanning bed in their lifetime. In Oregon, according to the FDA all sunlamp products must have a warning label, an accurate timer, an emergency stop control, and include an exposure schedule and protective goggles, but it should not stop there. There needs to be a heavier tax imposed on indoor tanning customers. Currently, there is a 10% tax that indoor tanners must pay. 10,000 tanning salons have closed across the country since 2010, eliminating up to 100,000 jobs and cutting the industry by half. Unfortunately, President Donald Trump is conducting the repeal of the Affordable Care Act which would lift the 10% tax imposed on indoor tanning
Tanning beds are beds that use ultraviolet rays (UV) to give the user a cosmetic tan.
The skin is an organ and the largest in the body. Not only does your skin protect you from harmful contaminants, such as bacteria and viruses, but it protects your skin from environmental toxins. However, the one thing that harms the skin the most is the sun. Skin cancer has become a very common occurrence in residents of Jasper, Dubois County, and its surrounding areas because we spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors. If you have suspicions that you may have skin cancer or you have already been diagnosed with it, Dr. Jason T. Stubbs, DO, ENT of the Southern Indiana Sinus Center is an expert in skin cancer and its treatment.
In conclusion, this advertisement shows how important sun protection knowledge really is. Even at a young age, knowing that melanoma is very easy to get may cause the rates of this deadly cancer to drop. This is a cancer that we know how to, and can, prevent. People should be doing everything in their power to do so, for this cancer spreads fast and is most always
Intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors, both contribute to this process. As discussed earlier, UV-induced damage to the DNA causes a poor renewal of the skin. When exposed to harsh sunlight, an individual is also exposed to the UV light that comes along with it. Excessive exposure can cause premature aging in certain individuals and also is observed as severe pigmentation and sunburns as well. The antioxidants, namely vitamin E and vitamin C are majorly targeted by the UV light and thus, reduce the antioxidant capacity of the epidermis on prolonged exposure. Removing makeup is as important as wearing makeup while stepping out. Not removing the makeup before going to bed also contributes to aging over a
Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches on the body. It is a condition where the extent and rate of the color loss is unpredictable and can depend greatly on the person with the condition. Vitiligo can affect any part of the skin on the body, and there are no limits on where or how much of the disease can spread (Mayo Clinic). Vitiligo is not frequent in the global population. Studies show that vitiligo has a frequency of 0.1-2.0% in the various populations (Spritz 2003). There are various factors as to which this frequency is low. For example, many people are embarrassed about the condition and chose not to come forward about it. To this day doctors cannot find the real cause of vitiligo, but doctors do have some
Eczema alludes to an unending incendiary skin condition, described by dry skin, with patches that are red and seriously irritated. These patches of eczema may overflow, turn out to be textured, crusted, or solidified. Side effects can run from mellow to extreme, and the condition can contrarily affect personal satisfaction. Dermatitis can happen anyplace on the skin and is normally found on the flexors. There are numerous sorts of eczema, with the most widely recognized one being atopic dermatitis. Atopy alludes to an innate inclination toward eczema, asthma, and unfavorably susceptible rhinitis. Individuals with eczema may endure with one of the other atopic maladies.
