Dante, the author of the poem puts him in the action as if these events actually happened. The Dante in the poem seems to feel pity for those who are trapped in hell while the poet Dante put those people there.
Virgil, a 1st century poet, the spirit of him is trapped in hell because he lived in a period before Christ and could not redeem his soul. Virgil is ordered to guide Dante through the 9 circles of Hell.
Beatrice, Dante’s lost love, is said to have sent an angel to aid Virgil in guiding Dante through Hell.
12. Symbols
Lucifer, I think, has the strongest meaning. He has the 3 faces of history’s biggest backstabbers. Alighieri strongly supported the idea to separate the state and the church. Lucifer represents this by having the face of Judas, the man who betrayed Christ, and both faces of Cassius and Brutus, the betrayers of Emperor Julius Caesar.

State governments were ruled by corrupt kings and greedy religious leaders. He was fueled by the loss of his status to write this book. Although the book doesn’t have a big twist, as it is part of a trilogy, I was able to connect the events of the book to our present day United States. In Canto VII the theme of materialism is presented. It is mentioned that this materialism raises a nation to greatness, and then plunges them into poverty. In our country today we have the few and the many. The few are the rich making the many the poor. I believe that when the rich are exempt from paying taxes or have the power to influence a decision made by our government, we are being plunged into poverty. Every year we pay a little more taxes. Right now the gas prices have dropped, but how much will they increase once the oil boom is once again over? I wouldn’t go as far as sending our so called leaders into the eternal torture of hell but Alighieri did. The world is a huge cycle and during Alighieri time, it was almost time for a change. Not a century later Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church and weakened it. New religions rose to power and empires collapsed with the church. I’m not an expert in economics or religion but with these extremist groups such as ISIS and men who don’t want to let our government spy on us, such as Edward Snowden, will mark the start of the downfall of our
Patrick Hunt analyzed Dante’s work, “Inferno”, perfectly. He uses valid points that makes up most Dante’s famous piece. Patrick Hunt identified that Dante’s important source is Christian Scriptures of The Bible. For an example, in Mark 9:45-48 says, “hell, where the fire never goes out … Everyone will be salted with fire.”
"The Inferno" is the first book in the epic poem called the “Divine Comedy” by the Italian politician Dante Alighieri and it is followed by "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso”. The book "Inferno", which is the Italian translation for Hell, tells the journey of its author through what he believes is Hell, which consists of nine circles of pain and suffering. In his journey, he is guided through the nine circles by the Roman poet Virgil. Each circle in the book represents a different type of sin with a different type of punishment, varying according to the degree of the offense they committed in their life. By the end of his journey through all of the circles, Dante realizes and emphasizes the perfection of God's Justice and the significance of each offense towards God’s unconditional love.
“The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in time of moral crisis preserve their neutrality” (Dante’s Inferno). Dante Alighieri was an Italian writer born in Florence. He made a huge impact between the late 1200’s and early 1300’s in Florence by his political views, ideology and writing style. In 1301 he was exiled out of Florence and from this he created his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy which houses Dante’s Inferno. Upon reading selections of Dante's Inferno (Cantos: one, three, five, and thirty-four) one cannot help but see that vast amount of allusion made by this world renown author.
Hi, Marcia, based upon your review Dante Alighieri’s The Inferno evoked an introspective reflection of your spiritual life. Although in high school the opportunity to read The Inferno did not come to fruition, you have a solid grasp on the purpose and message of the book now. Certainly, Dante’s skill in creative writing captivates readers and compels one to focus on their spiritual life. Furthermore, Dante descriptively shares sinners’ punishment depending on the severity of their sin.
Fueled by the anger surrounding his banishment from Florence in 1302, Dante Alighieri spitefully wrote the epic poem, the Divine Comedy. The Inferno, the first part of the trilogy of the Divine Comedy, tells the story of Dante the pilgrim and Dante the poet. The two personas deliver Dante’s journey through hell, the Inferno, with added depth. Dante is also guided by Virgil, an ancient Roman poet from 50 B.C. The three personas share different perspectives on the grueling detail of their findings in hell.
The Roman Catholic Church was extremely important at this time. Dante goes on his journey through hell leads to insight on his political views of religion at the time. This book is significant because Dante was going against what everyone believed and the King. His actions and beliefs we looked down upon. While wandering through hell Dante describes each level of and why the souls of these people were in this circle because of their similar sins they committed.
2006, Form B. In Dante’s Inferno, the protagonist Dante strays off the Path of True Way and journeys through Hell. Alongside him is his guide Virgil. As Dante travels through all nine circles of Hell, he sees suffering souls and important figures in his time wandering aimlessly and enduring agonizing torture. This journey through Hell makes for a good story; however, Dante’s excursion symbolizes a more in-depth concept.
Dante Alighieri is respected as one of the greatest poets today and through time. Born in Florence in 1265, Dante was exiled in 1302 due to political conflict. In his exile he wrote his epic masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, completed just before his death in 1321 (Quinones, Dante). It has had profound influence throughout time, inspiring countless writers, artists, and sparking numerous debates throughout the years. Written at the beginning of the Renaissance, the impact of this incredible work is abundant and clear.
Durante degli Alighieri, also known as Dante was born on either May or June in 1265. Dante was a great Italian poet of the late middle ages. His most notable work is “The Divine Comedy”, which is considered the greatest literary work to ever be written in the world of literature. To write The Divine Comedy, he used some characters which he has read about and people from his life. Virgil who was his guide in Hell, is an ancient Roman poet who wrote “The Aeneid”.
Dante’s Inferno is an epic poem by Durante “Dante” degli Alighieri, written in the 1300s. He wrote a trilogy, known as the Divine Comedy, consisting of Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. Dante was inspired by many events and issues happening at that time, such as the war between Guelphs and Ghibellines, the Battle of Montaperti, and Christian religious beliefs. In this paper, I will explore the first book, Inferno, on the topic of Hell and how the sinners had a significant impact on Dante’s journey through Hell. In Circle 5: Styx, Canto VIII, Filippo Argenti, a sinner of Wrathful, helped Dante to symbolize to readers his anger towards Black Guelphs, political enemies of the White Guelphs.
Cannibalism. Hatred. Sorrow. These three words describe Count Ugolino’s dark tale. The Inferno, written by Dante Alighieri, is about a journey through hell that the main character Dante must go through due to being exiled.
This essay aims to investigate the relevance of Italian 13,14 and 15th century religion, politics and art throughout Dantes inferno. Being the most important part of daily medieval life, Religion is prone to be one of the most influential topics in Dantes Divine comedy. Catholicism ruled as the dominant religion in medieval Florence from the late 13th to the early 14th century (Trotter). Dantes entire depiction of hell is based on Religion, Dantes spheres of hell all reflect a certain type of sin found in the bible (Trotter). The first circle of hell is Limbo, its inhabitants are mostly people of high
Essentially Dante was never settled after his exaltation and wandered endlessly. With his journey into the Inferno, Dante first awakens in a Dark Wood, at first sight he sees a light outlining a mountain in a distance and makes his way towards it. He is encountered by three beasts who stop his passage up the mountain. Before the monsters could have their way with Dante he is saved by the Roman poet Virgil who tells him to reach the mountain top he must first travel through Hell and Purgatory. Virgil was sent by Dante’s lover, Beatrice.
Dante’s Inferno represents a microcosm of society; meaning, laymen, church, politicians, and scholars are all compiled into one place and punished for their sins. Hell, despite being depicted as brutal, ugly, and chaotic, is made realistic because the inhabitants come from every country and every walk of life. While Dante Alighieri did not invent the idea of Hell itself, he did create an important and in depth concept that still receives attention in biblical, classical, and medieval works. The Divine Comedy itself was written sometime between the years 1308 and 1321 and scholars still consider it the “supreme work of Italian literature.” The work itself is an epic poem divided into three separate sections: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso; respectively Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven.
The most relevant literary element of this text is symbolism, Dante Alighieri utilized this element throughout the entirety of this epic poem. An example of the use of this element is in the text the sun is referred to as a symbol for divine illumination, and the “Dark Wood of Error” is a symbol for worldliness and one of the more significant uses of symbolism is Virgil, virgil is a symbol for human reason. Symbolism in a text is a useful way of making ideas/concepts realitable and understandable from the audience and/or reader. Personal Response: Although I enjoyed reading The Inferno written by Dante Alighieri, written in the early 14th century it was little difficult. I don’t typically read anytime of poetry so reading this text was challenging
