There are many themes in both O Brother where Art Thou and the Odyssey which seem to be strongly similar. Many similarities between the characters and their actions surface through their actions. In my essay I will not only compare and contrast the most important elements of the mentioned works, but will also discuss the importance of heroic figures and the less favored themes, such as revenge and foolish fearlessness.
During the fourteenth century, both the Inca Empire and Medieval Europe had important time periods. The Inca Empire was conquering more territory and making advances in their standard of living. Europe on the other hand, was troubled with the Black Plague, not understanding how to cure the epidemic, and not knowing the cause. This time period is called the Dark Ages because no important advancements were made. The Inca Empire was known for their wealth, gold plated buildings that lined the streets of Cuzco, and their villages that were surrounded by the rural hillside. While Europe did have countryside, it was often destroyed by war and most peasants lived in close quarters with animals.
Crusades were military expeditions that occurred during the twelfth and thirteenth century. The Crusaders were in conflict with Islam for thousands of years. The main reason and goal for the crusades were to conquer the Holy Land, Jerusalem. However, they were not able to achieve that goal. The Crusaders were unsuccessful in the short-term; however, they were successful in the long-term. From a political and financial point of view, the Crusaders were successful, however, from a religious point of view, they were not.
As Muslim rule dominated throughout Europe, accomplishments in culture, including architecture and intellectualism, were exceptionally noticeable in their legacy. Not only did religions intertwine, but the heart of rule also provided for a center of cultural creativity known throughout the globe; this accomplishment was enabled by political stability and unity.
The dark ages were the period between approximately 500-1500 A.D. It began shortly after the demise of the Roman Empire and it came to its conclusion once the Renaissance in Italy began to surface. It is labeled the dark ages by numerous scholars because during this period there was a shortage of literary and scientific studies. Other scholars believe that the label is false and the term dark ages is not an accurate description of this time. However, it was not branded the dark ages due to just it’s lack of literary and scientific advancements. The Year 1000 offers an accurate description of what life was like at the turn of the first millennium. This time should be branded as the dark ages not only because of its lack of study in literacy and science, but for scandalous activity that took place. The scandalous activity consists of sex scandals along with people of this time turning their back against the church and instituting pacts with Satan.
Even though during the Dark Ages it was harsh, people learned from this experience. The Fall of Rome led to chaos. First of all, the Dark Ages were dangerous. It was also hard to live and survive. Finally, a lot of death occurred. Because It was frightening and there was pandemonium, living in the dark ages were a living nightmare.
