Kulosaari dayhospital is one of the five dayhospitals owned by Helsingin kaupuki. Dayhospital offers two-month treatment periods for 18 patients at a time. The fundamentals of the treatment are community support and various group therapies. Every patient will make treatment and rehabilitation plans with his or her physician and nurse. Patients come to the dayhospital every morning at eight o’clock and leave after coffee around two in the afternoon.

My mentor and I agreed that my contact patient is a woman who started her care on the second week of my practice so I will see how her treatment is planned and how she progresses during the treatment. The helping relationship with the patient includes different phases. The first phase is called preinteraction phase where the nurse collects information about the patients before meeting him or her face to face. In my case I read my contact patient’s referral. The next phase is called introductory phase where the relationship opens and nurse introduces themselves to the patient, clarify the problem patient is facing and develop a mutual trust. The third phase is exploring and understanding feelings of the patient and taking action. The last phase is termination phase where the patient-nurse relationship
