Decision Making Journal Reflection
The art of effective and efficient decision-making can be an intricate matter. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the extreme importance of rational decision-making and how decisions can either positively or negatively influence us and other individuals. Additionally, it is crucial for business organizations to make adequate decisions that benefit all parties associated with that organization to guarantee future success.
Why Decision-Making is Important
The ability to rationally make significant decisions is essential for everyday life; from simple to complex matters associated with our personal lives or careers, we must be mindful that every single decision that we make impacts us in one way or another.

In light of this, psychology experts consider implementing six steps in order to make rationally based decisions: defining the issue, identifying the criteria, weighing the criteria, generating alternatives, rating alternatives on each criterion, and computing the optimal decision, respectively, maximizes our ability to utilize good judgment and minimizes the chances of making poor decisions (Bazerman & Moore, 2013). On a daily basis, we tend to think utilizing System 1, which is beneficial in many aspects, such as "interpreting verbal language or visual information" in instances where we are required to quickly respond (Bazerman & Moore, 2013, p. 3); in avoiding an oncoming vehicle, for example, it would be much better for us to quickly respond to the situation versus taking the time to process the situation; however, in instances where we are permitted to take our time in developing solutions, utilizing System 2 would be best. The fact that System 2 is explicit leaves less room for confusion or uncertainty and assures others that since one 's decision was carefully thought through with conscious effort, they can place better faith in the decision. It is also important to point out that since System 2 does not function off of personal emotions, which, depending on the individual, can often be irrational; it decreases the chances of a biased decision that may induce
In each decision made, something in an individual changes in order to make their choice. But what is it exactly that makes a person select an action? What can possibly determine the outcome of a situation so important that in that specific moment can change someone’s life path in an instant? There are many theories on what it could be, neurotransmitter, a desire for committing evil acts, or is it something completely random? One conclusion that could be drawn from this speculation is that a person’s prior experiences could be what sways the decision being made within the individuals mind.
ur ability to make decisions in less than two seconds is an interesting ability that belongs to our subconscious mind, demonstrated through journalist, Malcolm Gladwell’s National Bestseller Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. Gladwell’s use of logic, rhetorical questions, and anecdotes to inform readers fascinated with psychology, about our subconscious decision making. Gladwell appeals to logic to add to his credibility and factual tone. In chapter three of Blink, Malcolm Gladwell is stating the reasoning behind certain males being chosen as CEOs of companies is related to tallness. Gladwell backs up his theory by using statistics and facts, “ Among CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, that number is 58 percent.
Over the course of millions of years, it is believed that the human brain evolved to become the intelligent machine that it is today. Decision making is one of many adaptations the human brain has made. . However, there are theories now that humans do not make all decisions in their conscious mind. Something known as the “adaptive unconscious” is thought to process and order data quickly so as make impulsive decisions without the brain even thinking. This can be identified when one gets a gut instinct.

The Importance of Rationality At often times one may believe that making decisions should be predominantly based upon what one may feel or desire, though in reality such process frequently results in negative consequences, thus why in the process of making decisions, love should not overtake rationality. Decisions are what determines the success of people, businesses and nations, a good decision could mean extreme wealth and a bad decision could mean the end of a business or friendship. Dissecting how and why you make these decisions is important to finding the path to success. Rational self-interest is an assumption of how we make our decisions or how we should make them.
My thesis on adolescent brain development sheds light on some of the nonsensical decision making is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as characters certainly face the impulse control, self-consciousness, and risk taking. We have unlimited wants which can be satisfied by goods or services. But because of our limited resources (scarcity) only some of our wants can be fulfilled. We have to choose which of our needs will be satisfied. Rational choice is made when benefits and cost for each alternative is compared and the alternative with the biggest benefit over cost is chosen. This is a personal choice because each individual will assign different benefit and cost to each alternative based on personal preferences.
A decision is the thought process of choosing between two or more outcomes that may or may not have a great impact. When thoroughly pondered, living life is fundamentally based on making the best decisions. Whether or not they are great or small decision making is critical. Often times, it is the smallest decisions one can make that impact the even bigger decisions later to come. Everyday, people are faced with the task of making decisions. Most people decide when to wake up, what to eat, what to wear, who to interact with, and countless other choices. In a world surrounded by choices, people are confronted with easy-to-make and, conversely, challenging decisions. A decision can be influenced by one’s own experience, logic, and feelings. Making a decision is synonymous with a result; whatever choice one accepts, results in a particular outcome.
Every day we have to make choices; some minuscule and some grand. The Decision-Making lab was the most interesting to me because I got to play an advance version of the “Would You Rather?” game. This lab did not merely give me to choices for me to make a decision. The benefits, risks, and wording played huge roles in which one I chose. While doing this lab, I was able to not only make decisions for the purposes of the lab, I was able to reflect on the way I approach daily decisions.
