Deepwater Horizon is a Korean built oil rig platform that sat in the Gulf of Mexico. It arrived and became operation in the Gulf of Mexico in 2001 (Crandall, Parnell & Spillian, 2014). Although it functioned as a living quarters for employees, its main function was to drill for oil (Crandall, et al., 2014). The United States began using deepwater drilling as an alternative to offshore oil production in response to depleting oil reserves in more shallow waters off the United States’ coastline.
Days before the well exploded, BP, Macondo, and Halliburton, the owners and builders of the well, ran tests to ensure that the well was functioning properly and did not have any leaks (Crandall, et al., 2014). The results of their tests proved that there was not a good seal to contain the oil (Crandall, et al., 2014). Ultimately, they ran the tests three separate times, achieving the same results each time, and finally decided the results were incorrect and there was a good seal. They deemed Deepwater Horizon safe and properly functioning.

There were concrete pillars which supported the rig above the water. On April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico (Crandall, et al., 2014). Although there was a blowout preventer, it failed due to operator error. It spewed nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, killed 11 and injured 17 severely (Crandall, et al., 2014). Not only were human lives lost, but also various sea life was affected as well. In addition, this incident had crippling effects on the economy of the Gulf Coast, including tourism. Although Deepwater Horizon had a blowout preventer, an employee inadvertently affected its functionality (Crandall, et al., 2014). The fire from the explosion burned for 36 hours and was impossible to extinguish with water
Safety for the people close to the pathway should be of utmost importance, and it is provided with the steps and materials placed into the pipeline. Furthermore, the ecosystems around the tested Keystone XL are protected with advanced detection systems that search for the slightest drop in pressure and shut off the pipeline immediately. Richard Gonzales from NPR explains that a spill that had occurred on the less advanced Keystone pipeline was “completely isolated with 15 minutes and emergency procedures were activated.” Previous spills from pipelines have been relatively small in size, especially in comparison with other means of transportation. Leaks are now detected much faster than before, and with new advances in cleaning up the oil, cause small damage to the land that previously would have been in danger.
One mistake and you could blow the place up” (Laskas 220). Along with the possibility of the place bowing up, the rig itself is a very dangerous machine. The rig is an “unforgiving steel tower, rife with peril: stuff turns, fingers get lopped off, arms, a couple of years ago a leg” (Laskas 222). Similar to the coal mine, these workers at the oil rig risk their very own lives to steal from the depths of the earth for the simple fact of fueling America further, and keeping our country up and
The explosion is ruled circumstantial and a large sum of money will be rewarded for the conviction of anyone criminally related to the incident. The ship is now fully submerged in the harbor with the exception of the mast. This had been one of the most devastating disasters that has ever taken place against the American Navy. Before the Attack
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill, also referred to as the BP oil spill, occurred on April 20th, 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico, near the Mississippi River Delta. The oil spill was marked as one of the worst corporate inflicted ecological disaster in our nation’s history. Not only has the spill been polluting the Gulf with barrels of oil, it has been polluting politics with millions of political cartoons in regards to the spill. Illustrating the different reactions of the BP oil spill, Drew Sheneman created a political cartoon between a female figure and a Republican looking down at the after effects of the BP oil spill on the Gulf Coast. Sheneman’s political cartoon uses imagery, symbolism, and irony, to differentiate the woman and Republican’s different responses to the tragic oil spill.
One of the most heated debates in the political and environmental areas is the debate over hydraulic fracturing, or more its more colloquial term “fracking”. Fracking is the process by which normally inaccessible hydrocarbon deposits are made available. First a well is drilled down vertically, once the pipe has reached the shale it begins to bore horizontally for thousands more feet. Then, a combination of water, sand, and various chemicals are pushed out of the pipe at up to 9000 pounds per square inch. This frees the natural gas (a hydrocarbon) to then be pumped to the surface.
The disaster caused much damage such as wiping out ocean life as result Exxon paid billions in fines for the crisis.
There were many oil field accidents in Long Beach after oil was discovered on nearby Signal Hill in 1921, but the most tragic was the June 2, 1933, Richfield Oil Company disaster. An explosion at Twenty-Seventh Street and Lime Avenue killed nine, and injured thirty-five. It was a horrible catastrophe that began with a tremendous refinery blast that was felt in cities thirty miles away; even earthquake instruments in Pasadena registered the explosion. The fire that followed reached two homes, but the heroic efforts of 500 men, armed with shovels, prevented the oil that flowed from broken storage vats from igniting and spreading the fire further into residential areas. All in all fifty dwellings were damaged and a dozen other small buildings
Visitors observe oil still leaking from the Arizona’s fuel tanks. It amounts to a few quarts of oil a day that come to the surface. “They are droplets known as Pearl Harbor’s black tears” (Potts). Every day there are hundreds of thousands of guests that come to pay their respect. Pearl Harbor is remembered for a day that significantly changed history.
Oil companies construct “drilling wells with steel casings and cement barriers” to prevent the movement of gas and oil (“Not a Public Health Risk”). The steel is impermeable to the chemicals used in the fracking process. Cement barriers are a second layer of protection in case of human construction error and stop the chemicals from leaking if they were to ever leak. In an interview with Oil and Gas Attorney, Diana Dean, she was asked about the probability of the leakage of harmful chemicals like hydrochloric acid or methanol, she responded “ It is not likely but it is very possible due to human error in the building process of the wells” (Dean). The casings are assembled by man and have a ninety-nine percent success rate in preventing leaks.
1. Introduction In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform spit nearly five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest oil spill in history. The 1989 oil spill surpassed Exxon Valdez's oil spill in 1989 as the largest oil spill ever seen in US-controlled waters and the Ixtoc I oil spill of 1979 as the largest oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deepwater offshore rig, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico about 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 riggers and injuring 17 others.
Nowadays debris is an integral part of humanity life. Mankind thinks about how to make the product easier and cheaper to use, but nobody cares what happens with waste after it was used. We contaminate the environment with every decade increasingly: muddied air and water, global warming are an output of human life. The worst thing is that from such attitude other living beings are dying. Millions of animals and birds cannot withstand such environmental changes; their populations become smaller and, eventually, disappear altogether from the face of the earth.
Therefore, fracking will not continue because of its bad reputation. Fracking companies should also list the chemicals used in fracking fluids so that the contamination in water can be reversed. Linda Dong from dangersoffracking.com clearly explains that the underground water that is contaminated is permanent damage. Without knowing the chemicals in fracking fluids, better alternatives to harmful chemicals cannot be found. However, the fracking fluid that is left underground damages the environment that we live in.
Drilling into Disaster: BP in the Gulf of Mexico Gulf of Mexico is one of the valuable place in which it has variety of marine life, such as fish, shrimp and other species The issues of incident on spill oil should be on concerned as it leads to this disaster for human being and environment. The case is discussed how BP company responses. It means how its board and management accountability, corporate responsibility, risk management, code of conduct and whistleblowing, compensation practices, and stakeholder communications react on this disaster. With regard to the disaster, BP CEO should have behaved appropriately because he should have responsibility on his job and should give his employees a better solution better than not saying anything. The problem was still there even BP change CEO to Dudley.
Pollution is the introduction or release of substances or energy that decrease the quality of the marine environment. Many pollutants are toxic of harmful to marine life (Castro and Huber, 2010). South Africa is known around the world for being one of the most diverse marine environment in the world, with 83% of the known fish families residing in South Africa (Van der Elst, 2007). There are also many marine species that are endemic to South Africa, which means they are only found in South Africa. Almost 30% of the South African population lives on the coastline (Taljaard et al. 2006), which has led to the urbanization of the coastlines and which then led to the industrialization of these areas.
The ocean is nowadays undergoing numerous environmental issues that further lead to marine pollution. Marine pollution is a very serious environmental issue that most of the countries of the world encounter. Aquatic littering is considered as one of the major causes of marine environment. The misleading use of the marine environment is extremely impacting the marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, the total amount of toxins and debris discharged by human beings is incredibly increasing in today 's world.
