Values are the concrete systems that societies use to determine right from wrong. Typically, people learn what their values are based on what they observe within their home and around their outside environment. Values are principles of what is considered standard in terms of behavior. Values also help people define what is important in life and what things are worth pursuing.
In the text, Essentials of Sociology: a down to earth approach, Henslin defines values as, “The standards by which people define what is desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or ugly” (Ch. 2). Values exist in every part of the world, IN the U.S for example, it can be argued that diversity is a prime value for Americans. In the article, “p----” author, explains that

More than 20 percent of the population of two major cities, Los Angeles and New York, were born in another country” (____). This shows that America has diversity that other countries do not have. I many parts all over the U.S these differences in color, race, religion and sexual orientation is celebrated and encouraged. Portland is a phenomenal example of this value, existence value. IN this city you can find a church next to a mosque, where it is impossible to find this in other some countries. For example, In Saudi Arabia there are roads that do not allow non-muslims to drive on those roads. This sheds light on a very important aspect of values. Some people may see these signs and automatically assume that Saudi Arabia does not welcome or accept non-muslims, when in reality the purpose of those lanes is to give priority to those who are traveling to the holy city of Mecca. Values can vary
No matter how hard one tries, a person cannot debate a proven fact. Often times, the use of facts in literature can create a strong, compelling argument. In “Rough Justice: A Caning in Singapore Stirs Up a Fierce Debate about Crime and Punishment” by Alejandro Reyes, the author uses statistics, logic, and facts to build his argument supporting Singapore’s justice system that focuses on “a sense of personal responsibility” (Reyes 182). Unlike “Rough Justice,” the editorial, “Time to Assert American Values,” lacks logic but still attempts to convince readers of going against Singapore’s caning policy. After carefully analyzing the two texts, the reader realizes that the article “Rough Justice” is the most relevant and sufficient argument because of the author’s use rhetorical appeals and
The values that I think an ethical society should follow are a combination of doing things that will produce a good outcome for the most people but also trying to exhibit moral character. Actions to will be the best for the most people are good unless there is severe and unwarranted harm being done to some part of the population. My ethical values prioritize actions that produce the best outcome for the most people, except in extreme circumstances where that action will cause unjustifiable harm to part of the population. There are many categories of ethics to be considered when faced with an ethical dilemma. Some of them include, Consequentialism, which states that a morally right act is one that will produce a good outcome, Utilitarianism, which states that a morally right act is one that maximizes utility, and Hedonist Utilitarianism, which states that a morally right act is one that maximizes pleasure and minimizes pain.
A place filled with difference and diversity around every corner has become the identity of America. A home of immigrants; a place of culture mixing with culture and color mixing with color; anything can and will happen here. Sometimes, my little town may appear to lack culture and color, but it does not lack pride. Here flags fly high on almost every block, and the “‘Merica” themed dress-up days have the most participation amongst students in school.
The richness of El Paso, Texas relies on the vast diversity observed in each one of its citizens, which has opened the way for El Paso to develop as a multicultural city. Emigration has been one of the main factors that has diversified El Paso’s cultural background, citizens from all over the world have landed a foot over American territory and have made it theirs, several nationalities, several races, one community, one El Paso. Emigration has also caused the expansion of a plethora of traditions across the area, which has made El Paso’s culture an indispensable resource of the state of Texas. American 's gained their independence because of a decision by its ' colonial citizens to pursue freedom through the legitimate use of armed force. Disparate American colonies fought on a unified front for a set of defining values and principles centered on their customs, traditions, and desired institutions. These values and principles have endured and transcended since 1776 through multiple wars which have challenged American values, principles, and institutions.
Values are those which seem of great prominence to one and meaning influenced by the daily movement, experiences and viewing of perspectives that profoundly surround us and change our thinking. A text can challenge these values by the use of characters that reach out to the audience and allow them to rethink their own by the presenting of differing perspectives. A text’s word can influence different meaning, send out a message, inform and change one’s opinions and beliefs by allowing one to experience different ideas and then to re-think about them. The ideas can oppose conceptions formed without any evidence resulting in the creation of new values, beliefs and visions to perceive the world by filling in the gaps of evidence that was not there
America’s Diverse Population In the nineteenth century, rates of immigration across the world increased. Within thirty years, over eleven million immigrants came to the United States. There were new types of people migrating than what the United States were used to seeing as well. Which made people from different backgrounds and of different race work and live in tight spaces together; causing them to be unified.

Moral values are relating to the principles of right conduct or what a person sees as right and wrong. So it is basically what people think is right and wrong. This strongly influences the decisions that they take, considering that a person will do something if it seems wrong. Nonetheless, people still do things that they know are wrong, but most decisions a human being makes are
However, both have different meanings as stated above. Values are defined as the continuous belief that a specific desired end state or way of conduct is desirable that varies among people from different cultures (Rokeach, 1973). Milton Rokeach divides them into two, i.e. Terminal and Instrumental values. The Eight Step Ethical Decision-Making Model (Corey, Corey, & Callanan, 2011)
But, living in a multicultural city is by itself a very beneficial exercise not only on a personal level but also in terms of cultural exchange, economic exchange and generating new ideas. One experiences what is called cultural variety when living in a diverse area. He is somehow introduced to new kinds of foods, architectures, arts, music, festivals, religions, mythologies, writings and more of general day-to-day life. These new things would easily open one’s heart and mind to new places, new ideas and new people. According to (Wolfstone, 2010) nowadays all people around the world happily go out and eat Chinese food, use Japanese technology, drive German
