It is important that a team leader is more of a mentor to their team members rather than just being a strict manager. Team leaders should understand their team members well. Today employees are to share a healthy comfortable level of relationship with their supervisors and managers. A team leader has the responsibility to encourage their team to provide the best and immediately intervene in cases of conflict. All team members should be able to trust the team leader, look up to them and take their team lead advice confidentially whenever required.
Working in an environment where employees do not fear being fired for making a mistake, but know that they have the space and the resources to learn from those mistakes to improve themselves is a recipe for a committed and productive workforce (Wilson, 2008). A leader needs to adapt to situations and use techniques that are inclusive in order to avoid conflict and aids decision-making. Building relationships, considering others feelings and celebrating their successes with them can maintain strong leadership. By encouraging my team to participate in the decision making process I empower them, which inspires job satisfaction this reduces conflict, poor time keeping and absenteeism. I need to be able to help my staff team understand the need for change and I do this by being clear about my aims and objectives, the actions required and the part they need to play. Sometimes I need to take control especially where health and safety is concerned, these policies and procedures me adhered to at all times.

I like the servant leadership profile and although I know that I am still far away from the characteristics of the servant leader, I hope that one day I will become a servant leader. Servant leaders by the way, are humble and effective, they emphasize ethics, community development, and self-sacrifice (Carpenter et al., 2009, 246-247). Their employees’ happiness is their goal. They focus on developing others and in helping them reach their full potential. This type of leadership enhances employees’ job performance, motivates employees, and reduces turnover.
Essentially it is the idea that everyone should have the same goal in mind, and should - as a team - work towards it. This will foster a team ethos and spirit, and will see the team work together to obtain their goal. By essentially having your team “buy in” to the idea of achieving this goal together, you motivate them to work as a team and will achieve better results. It is not enough to simply set that goal though, the leadership is integral to its completion and should strive towards it alongside their subordinates. Reflective Report based on the leadership experience encountered during the leadership challenge during activity day. On many occasions, there are often times when we are supposed to lead the way. Leadership is the process or the ability of leading a group or organization but does leadership mean only leading the group? There is more than one definition for leadership. I have worked in groups many times in both academic as well as workplace in which I have both followed a leader as well as led a group.
First with a strength-based organization, there are assessments and observations that help find strengths. This will allow the managers to get to know their staff better, also allowing the staff member to feel as though what makes them unique is important (Samuels & Hoxsey, 2010). The staff members are also going to get to know the strengths of the manager. This allows the staff members to better understand how and why the manager makes decisions and comes up with ideas like they do. Another benefit of a strength-based organization is it allows each staff member to be placed in the right part of the team (Samuels & Hoxsey, 2010).
Communication is also another huge skill. A leader needs to be able to clearly communicate, build relationships, motivate others, inspire others, and be a role model to create a positive work environment and culture that will accept change and innovation in the company. Leaders also need to show everyone how to behave, and they need to be honest, show appreciation, and work towards a bright future. If a leader is not effective the whole company can fall apart. Leadership is all about the relationship between those that aim and strive to lead and those who select and follow them and work together on shared goals.
In essence, when an organization works with satisfied employees, the employees will try as much as possible to ensure they have a sustainable job through working for the benefit of the organization’s sustainability.
