DBQ - Democracy in Colonial America Essay Due to British political traditions the 13 colonies One democratic feature is the control of the abuse of power, it means that no person/persons can disobey or break our laws and get away with it not even government leaders. For example say our president broke a law he would not get any special treatment he would have the same punishment as as everyone else which is explained in document 6:Engraving of Virginia's House of Burgess's. One undemocratic feature is individual or human rights, it was undemocratic because we had slaves back then in the olden times and the slaves had no rights, it was undemocratic because , and things of that sort are not democratic, this is explained in document 5:
Economic Freedom is a major undemocratic feature of Colonial America. Economic Freedom is where people do not have the powers that they should have in their democracy. These rights would be like the rights of speech and the right for you to choose your religion or the right to bear arms. Economic Freedom is important because these are basic rights that you need and everyone show have, you should be able to choose what you would like to do. This is why Economic Freedom is a major undemocratic feature of Colonial America.
Where there’s valued equality and where people are free from unreason. “Slaves had no legal rights” quoted from Plan of a Slave Ship is a great example that the slaves were not treated equally to others because they were forced in confined spaces and forced to become servants
Europeans were most powerful so they did a sudden assault to Africa’s coast and proceed in the domestic kidnapping and helpless people. Africans seller used to sale slaves and in return European’s gun, textiles, rums, copper, beads, and various important material used to be on their farm. African societies were engaged in overland slave for a long time, which transported slave from West Africa across the Sahara Desert to Roman Europe and the Middle East. The democratic and undemocratic features of colonial America were very apparent in that democracy as it was a work in progress. Although they were working out the issues, the colonists had some democratic features that were set and working. The rule of law describes that no person is above the supreme law. Everyone must obey laws; there is no supreme leader that can do anything they want. In Document 3: The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, it states “they shall have the power to call public officials or any other person into question for any misdemeanor and may with good reason remove or deal
America is a country made of immigrants and their children. The First Amendment is so important because it guarantees that people won’t be arrested by the government for customs they have. Religion is the backbone of almost every major culture and civilization in the world. Having religious freedom means that no matter what god(s) you worship, no one has the right pursue legal action against you. This also means that the United States cannot establish a national religion.
The primary source I choose for my project was the two runaway slave ads we discussed in class. I choose theses because they shows the contrast between southern and northern colonies. Although there was slavery in the north it was not as much of a widespread because the demand was not as high as it was in the south. The south needed mass slave labor in order to maintain the crops and fulfil the American agrarian dependent ideal, similar to the one Jefferson was a supporter of. In the ads a lack of humanity was displayed by the description of the slaves.
We have rights to protect ourselves and those around us. Without rights this world will be hectic and anyone would be in a terrible place. As citizens we have the freedom of religion, speech, and the press. No one can tell you what you can and cannot, well it all depends on rather it’s illegal or legal. Knowledge
“no religious outlook or Weltanschauung, can enjoy a privileged status, let alone be adopted as the official view of the state” I found this passage noteworthy because it demands that no religious outlook be put before another, but that is exactly what happens and has been happening, all these years. I would like to say that I think the reason there is such a lack of equality with different countries and “cultures” and why we are in constant war is because of this exact reason; religion. Most religious people always think their religion is better than another persons and this causes conflict. The countries laws reflect their religious views in the morals that they choose to have. If religion wasn 't such a big concept would we find peace between different cultures and countires?
In the First Amendment of the Constitution is the principal article in the Bill of Rights, it restricts Congress from meddling with the freedom of religion, speech and press, and assembly and petition. The First Amendment should have limits to how far the freedom is taken. Freedom of religion has became a issue in the world today, we see in today’s society's how our views have changed on certain religions. Freedom of speech and press gives everyone the right to say what they want as long as it doesn’t cause individuals to feel uncomfortable because of invasion in their privacy. Freedom of assembly and petition gives every individual the privilege to be anywhere at any time as long as it doesn’t cause violence on public property.
