DENOTATION AND CONNOTATION MEANINGS

IN “EARTH SONG” BY MICHAEL JACKSON
I. INTRODUCTION

Language is a way of any living things including us; humans to communicate in order to

deliver any kinds of information, expressions, and feelings to each other. The communication

really assists us to interact with others. The principle of communication is the understanding

about what we interact are. In a literary way, humans can express their feelings in forms of

writing a literary works such as poetries, novels, and even song lyrics. Song lyrics are the

main subjects of analysis because we can find many combinations of vocabularies and

3.1. Denotation and Connotation

1. What about all the peace

 Denotation

The word ‘peace’ means that Michael asked the freedom of the world

now. He asks the period of time when there is no war or fighting.

 Connotation

The ‘peace’ in the lyric imagine as a situation when someone asked

other people about the peace that they have. According to the lyrics, the world

situation is worse than before. They do not have a peace anymore in this

world. The word ‘peace’ does not only means of freedom but they also missed

a world where people care and respect each other, not only to humans but also

animals, plants and inanimate objects around us.

2. All the blood we've shed before

 Denotation

According to dictionary ‘blood’ is the red liquid that circulated in the

arteries and veins of humans and other vertebrate animals. Blood is carrying

oxygen to and carbon dioxide from the tissues of the body.

 Connotation

The word ‘Blood’ in the lyric is the situation where people kills the

animals for some others reason. It can be the violence involving bloodshed.
