There are increasing numbers of careers in the United States. In ranking, one of the best health care job’s in top four career is dental hygienist. The career as dental hygienist intrigued me, when as a child I used to have lots of cavity in my teeth and I had to visit the dental office frequently. Then I did not know about the dental hygienist job but I was very curious about the instruments and tools and always wondered how do they make the tooth ache go away. To be one of the successful dental hygienist, one should have an associate’s degree in dental hygiene and a bachelor's or master's degree is usually required for research, teaching, or clinical practice in public or school health programs. In order to further study for getting a bachelor’s degree in Dental hygiene, to apply for the University requires good GPA score as well as prerequisite courses must be completed. Abstract The main goal in becoming a Dental Hygienist is being professional and knowledgeable in every aspect of dental hygiene. In dental hygiene, there are several professional roles one can choose from. Some of these roles include that of being an educator, researcher, entrepreneur, administrator, corporate, clinician, and public health. The scope of dental hygiene has evolved since it first became a profession in the 1900’s (Wilkins, Wyche, & Boyd 2017).
Then, one of the dentists suggest to me how psychology can be expanded to the dental hygiene field of work. I liked how dental hygienist provides care not only with active communication but also empathy and compassion. As soon as I set my goal to be a dental hygienist, I did not hesitate to move to Spokane for my education.
If desired to education can be continued by obtaining a bachelor’s or master’s degree in dental hygiene. Then a passing score on the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam is required to be eligible for the licensure exam. Next, a clinical exam must be taken. In order to practice a license must be obtained. The state in which the hygienist plans in practicing, is where the licensure exam must be taken and passed.
The first career I researched was dental hygienist. A dental hygienist is someone who cleans patient’s mouth, checks for and educates patients about mouth diseases, and take x-rays of the mouth. I chose to research this career because over the past year or so I became curious about this career. In my research I found many dental hygienist work at least two jobs because dentists hire them to work part time.
This profession fits best with my lifestyle because I plan on having new friends, living around the Joplin area and I love helping people feel their best and boosting their confidence. Personality is a big thing with a career like dentistry you are always interacting, and meeting new people and you have to learn how to treat people and act in front of them. I could personally contribute kindness and facts that I have learned to make it a better occupation and make people want to come back. In Eritrea typically oral hygiene is very poor, this is often due to the lack of Oral Health Education and inadequacy of professionals to educate the public. Throughout my work experience in Eritrea I saw many patients with poor oral hygiene resulting in periodontal disease and ultimately leading to loss of teeth. This placement inspired me and increased my determination to take this career path, as each time I witnessed patients with such problems I was left feeling very sympathetic and compassionate toward them. When I saw them being treated and relieved from their pain, I was left feeling pleased as I felt this was a great accomplishment this has led me to one day hope to open my own practice in Eritrea.
