a) The addition of inorganic filler particles to the organic matrix of monomers enhances important mechanical properties of the composites making them stronger, stiffer and tougher.

Positive aspects of filler particles are:
• They impart strength and aid good mechanical bonding of composite (Söderholm, M. 1999), thereby increasing abrasion resistance and fracture toughness, making the material easy to cut and polish and aesthetically pleasing.
• They help reduce the amount of matrix material, reinforcing it to produce increased compressive strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity (stiffness) and decreased wear.
