Ethos, pathos and logos are the three rhetorical appeals that I use everyday. I used it in many discussions with my mom, arguments with my siblings, or just simply as asking my friend to go out at night. Since the used of it is not mentioned frequently, people often don’t know the meaning of tools and whether they had used it or not. Rhetorical tools are used in an argument, especially when you try to persuade someone with the opposite view or someone who is still shilly-shally about the issue. After the first journal I wrote, I had discover more about how to use those tools and how to evaluate it.
1. Writers of persuasive essays get people to adopt an idea or take a side using a thesis and strong supporting evidence. Words with positive and negative connotation also play a role in influencing people. An example of this is found on pages 42 and 43. Here, Al Gore uses valid evidence from multiple studies, and David Gelernter uses multiple words with negative connotation 2.
Within Holder’s speech there were instances of multiple fallacies. One specific fallacy is the generalizations Holder makes in his speech, much like the ones that were used for deductive reasoning. These generalizations were often subjective and not backed up with evidence, which leads to hasty generalizations. Holder states that those who are against animal testing are mainly youth, which infers that all youth are against animal testing. However, it is not just youth who are against animal testing and not all youth are not against animal testing.

In President Bush’s address to the nation, he uses many rhetorical devices. A rhetorical device is a literary device that is used to persuade the audience to support the argument made. Bush’s address uses Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. They were invented and studied by the famous greek philosopher Aristotle. Ethos appeals to credibility, Logos appeals to logic or reason, and Pathos appeals to the audience’s feelings.

Persuasion techniques are often used by political figures, sales people, entrepreneurs, and just about anyone trying to persuade a target audience through emotions, character, and logic. The ad, I Am One, shows how these vehicles of persuasion are presented and used; rhetorical strategies like tone, attitude, and non-rhetorical strategies related, patriotism and history references.
How does a person make themselves more persuasive and trustworthy? The answer is rhetorical appeals. There are three main appeals that allow a person to be more persuasive and active in a speech or writing including pathos, logos, and ethos.
Pathos is the driving artistic proof in ceremonial rhetoric. Coretta Scott King was still mourning the death of her husband when he delivered this speech. During her speech, she references often to her husband. She targets her audience’s emotions at the beginning of her speech when she asks them to help strengthen her as she is getting through this tough time. The third artistic proof used is Logos.
Persuading by appealing to readers emotions. It depends on the language choice of affect to the audience's emotional response. Pathos can make the argument very strong. Many world class athletes have strength, focused on one goal and love is very common in sports today. Nike adds fuel to these emotions by adding ," just do it".
