A main issue in It’s Kind of a Funny Story is depression. From the very beginning he starts to explain how he feels and the procedures he endures for his mental illness. Depression is not an easily identifiable illness. Around 20 million people in the United States suffer from depression every year and with reference to those 20 million only a small percentage are actually diagnosed or aware of it. In chapter 1 Craig says he looks the same as everyone else, “normal”, which gives proof that you can’t really see depression because it blends in. Worldwide around 350 million people suffer from the mental illness,with such a big number the way affected people act will seem common. 1 in 4 young adults (Craig’s age group) suffer from depression.
