Literature Review According to the research question our group proposed, the dependant variable is depression level among UTAR students and the independent variable is quality of sleep. Sleep quality is important for our health. Poor sleep quality will affect the physical health of the individual in the long run. First and foremost, there are two variables in this research question which is the depression level of the students and the quality of sleep. One of the factors that cause depression is school itself. School is the main source of stress for adolescents, and stress is one of the main factors causing depression. Due to fast physical changes and mental development at this stage, students may sometimes feel that their mental development and their physical changes or with the social environment are incompatible and thus they suffer from problems of inadequate adaptation. …show more content…
In Lai & Say’s (2012) research, 8.7 % of the UTAR students reported that their overall sleep was very good, 58% - fairly good, and 33.3% - fairly bad or very bad. The majority of the UTAR students (67.1%) were good sleepers based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The second research question is “What are the depression level among UTAR students?”. In Tan’s (2011) research, the data collected in the research, UTAR students have moderate depression level on average based on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The third research question is “Is there any significant relationship between quality of sleep and depression among UTAR students?”.According to Tan’s (2011) research, it shows that there is a significant positive correlation between insomnia and depression. The result of Pearson Correlation showed that there was a significant positive correlation between level of insomnia and depression among undergraduates in UTAR (Tan, 2011). Latest
In this paper, an experiment was performed to evaluate a small portion of people in each grade level and measure the level of risk they have for becoming depressed. Showing the trends of the amount of depression symptoms shown and the different common answers that were listed when the students took the test. There is a trend between the grades and how many kids are at a higher risk of being depressed. This essay will also show the methods that were used to collect the information and the different tools/ways used to record all the information. There will also be tables and/or graphs used to represent the data that has been collected.
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
In his study, Pasch et al. found that depression and the average amount of sleep on school nights is “significantly negatively associated”. This means that as hours of sleep decreases, depression increases and vice versa. In the study done by the National Sleep Foundation, 73% of the students who said they were unhappy, felt they don’t get enough sleep at night. By increasing sleep, it is likely that students mood will increase as well.
Task 1 Mental Disorders= is whereby an individual has a mental condition which leads to impairment of the mind and the functioning of that person. This can have an effect on the person’s emotion and personality. Depression Depression is an illness which involves the body, thoughts and mood; this can have an effect on normal functioning daily. There are emotional, motivational, cognitive and physical symptoms which are linked in with depression. There are two types of explanations of depression one is biological and the other is psychological.
A report by Newsweek says that “Perpetual lack of sleep is tied to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression and a shortened life span in adults, underscoring the importance of establishing good sleep habits early in life”(1). We may be fine without sufficient sleep now, but health consequences will show later in life. Diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are already big problems in America. An article by CNN says that “Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also more likely to suffer from depression and have suicidal thoughts” (1). The mental health of students at Clarke should not be overlooked.
In this case study researchers examined the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD) scale with the care giver population. The CESD scale is consider one of the most common measures of heath research for depressive symptoms, patient and population outcomes. The CESD-10 is widely use in studies, but however researchers indicate of considering a briefer analysis by excluding one both positive word item. Researcher in the studies conducted testing the CESD-10 scale with both Classic Test Theory psychometrics and Rasch analysis because based of their previous concerns about the positively worded items.
“The Glory of a Summer Sleep” by Michael McGirr Healthy levels of sleep and sleep schedules correlate to strong mental health and higher test scores, a fact especially relevant for the millions of sleep deprived teens. Sentiments of success at the cost of mental and physical wellbeing are ingrained in society. Furthermore, wasting time is looked down upon and seen as unproductive, although it can have positive effects on efficiency and emotions. This cycle of sleep deprivation in pursuit of success is entrenched in my life.
Groggy, tired, depressed, can’t think straight. These are things that most students experience every day. School start times are causing students to miss out on sleep, causing sleep deprivation. This can lead to depression, increased rate of car crashes and a decrease in cognitive thinking abilities. Not only can the amount of sleep a student receives affect their performance in school, but also their health and safety.
The amount of students getting less than 7 hours of sleep every night went down by 97.4% from the time of the first survey to the second. Those who were receiving 8 or more hours a night increased all the way from 16.4% to 54.7% (Burke 37). Although the number of students reporting bad quality of sleep and short sleep duration decreased significantly from the first survey to the next, students still had difficulty falling asleep several times a week (Burke 37). The second survey also reported a decrease in fatigue, sleepiness during the day, and symptoms of depression. Most health-related issues and complaints such as class attendance and visits to the school 's nurse’s office also decreased from the first survey to the other (Burke
Should schools start at a later time? Do teenagers have a better work performance in later times than in early times? I'm pretty sure most teenagers hate getting up for school. Most teenagers have trouble waking up and leaving their comfortable beds just to wake up early for school. Not getting enough sleep can lead to mad tempers and poor performance in class and here is why.
Introduction: Typically, college students falling in the category of young adults should be getting anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep per night. However, that is not the case, especially of students transitioning into their first year of college. Sleep is an essential component in our everyday lives, as much of a necessity as oxygen or water. Getting the proper amount of sleep provides many useful functions for the human body, such as the ability to retain memories and knowledge and heavily impacts our decision making (Gilbert and Weaver, 2010). Due to the fact that many students have a hard time transitioning into college, many lose the required sleep needed, thus the functions it provides resulting in a sleep deprivation.
It is widely known that peer pressure, drug and alcohol abuse, and reckless driving are dangers that some teenagers may face; however, there is one major, yet less publicized problem that an increasing number of teenagers are dealing with on a daily basis. Both teenagers and adults suffer from sleep deprivation, but “the problem is most acute among teens” (Richter). Sleep deprivation is being referred to as an epidemic among experts, and it can have drastic effects on a teenager’s physical, mental, and social well-being. “The most recent national poll shows that more than 87 percent of U.S. high school students get far less than the recommended eight to 10 hours of sleep each night” (Richter). Teenagers have “irregular sleep patterns” and they stay up late, affecting their “biological clocks” which can “hurt the quality of their sleep” (National Sleep Foundation).
Introduction Good morning everyone. I’m Nur Atiqah binti maznan and today I will deliver a speech title ‘People should care more about sleep’ Most of us in this class will say that we not get enough sleep because of all assignments, lab reports and so on like just now. So, we called this situation as sleep deprivation which means a condition where people not get enough sleep. We are in the same shoes, so no worries. A research from Brown University stated that, from a survey they conducted to a group of college student, 11% student have a good sleep but the rest which is 73% from the same study were found to have a sleep problem.
Personal narrative Depression can be a monster and destroy the lives of people, but in my case it help me express my emotions better by helping me be more honest with myself. Depression has never been alien to me. Since middle school I have danced with the devil. I do not know what triggered it then, but it was mostly likely hormones. Despite that ever looming sadness over my head, I was still doing well in school, at least as best as I could do, I still hung out with people and I was still social when I had to be.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEPING WELL Hello everybody, I’m going to speak about the most time-consuming activity in our lives: sleeping. As a matter of fact, we usually don’t pay much attention to the quality of our sleep, in spite of influencing a big deal our performance during the day, our health and well-being, in other words, our quality of life. That’s the reason why I would like to introduce some interesting material to understand better this important though disregarded necessity.
