Descartes presents an argument for how we know that we exist. It is difficult to question something we don’t know because we don’t know where to start. If there is an answer, there is a question, however if humans do not exist, there would be no one to question their existence. On the topic of existence, Descartes claims that he cannot be misinformed about his own existence, and that he is a thinking thing. Everything exists both through imagination and through reality. In some religions, people believe that there exists a deity that created us and is all powerful. Our knowledge of our history affects the decisions we make because we know the consequences if we take action or if the event occurs. The following will argue that we exist, and …show more content…
People are “so peculiar that some may be inclined to doubt [His] reality, or the significance of claims about [Him]” (Nagel, 337). We can’t prove that God exists in scientifically, but humanity has basically acknowledged that there is a God or gods. In many religions, they said that God has revealed Himself to mankind. One way he did it was by sending his son, Jesus, down to earth. There were many prophets, like Buddha, Muhammad, Moses, etc. But they never said they were God, they only said that they can communicate with Him, and were spreading His word. The universe was created millions, if not more or less, years ago; it did not always exist, and someone or something had to create it. Many Scientists say that the universe started out with a big bang. However, they did not have an explanation for what caused the big bang to happen. The same consideration can be said about everything on earth. In Nagel’s article, he talks about a caterpillar, and how it “is locked in a sterile safe by someone unfamiliar with insect metamorphosis, and weeks later the safe is reopened, revealing a butterfly” (Nagel, 345). This is one of the many examples of God’s creation. He decided to give this organism the ability to change its form from a larva to a flying insect. Humans do not have the ability to change forms, so each of His creations are unique, and authentic. We …show more content…
What people know from the past affects the present. What we do presently, will affect our future. If our past, present, and future does not exist, there is no need for us to be concerned about how it will affect us. Assuming that we do not exist, there would be no need to take action, because it will not concern us. Throughout human life, people always have “questions about the physically basis of [their] experience to assume a more intelligible form” (Nagel, 346). When an occasion happens, people learn from it, and determine either how they can avoid it from repeating in the future or how they can help others experience it as well. One terrible event in U.S. history was the terror attacks on 9/11. When the events unfolded, the government took action, and grounded all planes in the air. Following the circumstances, the government responded by making airport security tighter, and moved into the Middle East to make sure the same incident does not reoccur in the future. Even with the incidents happening today, like ISIS, are being focused on so it can be stopped and taken care of before a dreadful event happens in the future. On a lighter note, there are people who are researching medicine to help individuals treat sicknesses. Scientists and doctors have produced vaccinations, and procedures that can help the ill recover. If everything around us did not exist, then why would these doctors and scientists put all
Descartes gave a few arguments that God exists and is real. Desocrates believed our idea of God is that God is a perfect being, he believed he is more perfect to exist than not to exist. Desocrates also believed that God is a infinite being. Descartes idea would be that God gave us this idea to type this paragraph about him so he must be real. When he thinks negative of an idea or thought he wonders if an evil demon plotted those thoughts.
The topic I am going to focus on is the existence of God. In this topic I will research into the teleological argument (argument from design) and what it shows about the existence of God. As God has all of these amazing qualities, it can only be understood that he was the designer of the world as only someone with such talents would be capable of designing the universe. The teleological argument was formed to prove that God exists. The idea is that God was the creator of the universe and he created everything with a purpose as well as all life being created with a definite goa however, many flaws are pointed to.
Pascal and Descartes were two early philosophers to question this. Pascal fully understood the uncertainty of God in reality; how science cannot prove or disprove a God, therefore
There exists a lot of intricate detail, purpose and design all over the world that makes humans believe that there must be a creator. According to Mitchell (2008), teleological argument is therefore an approach that asserts to proof the existence of Gog and is sometimes called Design argument. All the ordinary and extraordinary that occur in the natural world cannot be said to have occurred by chance. Many people need explanation for the situation of the complexities of the universe. This paper thus is going to present the explanation of the existence of god as well as highlighting some critiques towards the explanation.
Introduction Many arguments or testimonies for the Existence of God have been proposed by philosophers, theologians, and other thinkers. These arguments have an epistemological dimension and an ontological dimension. The watchmaker argument states that we know life must have been created as it is complex, just as a watch is complex, it draws that watches are created by intelligent life, so, therefore, life must have created by an intelligent being. This argument has many flaws, many questions still yet to have a sound answer, the soundness of this argument, or better fit, analogy, will be discussed throughout this essay. This writing will start by outlining in the first part the origin of the theory/analogy, the in the second part the flaws surrounding the theory, then finally in the third part, the contradictions with other theories such as the one proposed by Charles Darwin.
God acts with purpose, as can be seen in the book of gensis and the Creation stories. Outside of Aquinas’ Five Ways to prove God’s existence, the most key arguments that Aquinas puts forth are due to the analogical way humans speak about God. The univocal and equivocal nature in which humans use theological language to describe God Himself is an essential component to understanding God’s existence. Neither univocal nor equivocal descriptions can truly encompass the analogous relationship humans have with
As a result of my life experience, nature helped me to become a Christian and look more into evidence that points towards a Creator through the universe. The Cosmological and Teleological arguments provide evidence of a Creator. The Cosmological argument is that everything that is created has a cause, for example, an egg comes from a chicken. But there has to be a first cause that was uncaused. More accurately, “ Whatever begins to exist, has a cause of its existence.
While there are many arguments for the existence of God, as well as arguments against His existence, Pascal 's argument is the most basic and relatable. Pascal explains his wager theory as a wager where you’re better off betting that God exists rather than not due to a bigger reward. When you believe that God exists, and you’re right, you gain eternal life; if you’re wrong you lose nothing. In contrast, if you bet against God, and you’re wrong, you miss out on the eternal life that you could’ve had. While further explaining his theory, this paper will explore his theory with different religions and different Gods as opposed to an Abrahamic God which we assume Pascal is talking about; this paper will analyze different Gods and different wagers and decide, if
The argument for God’s existence is that God is a perfect being, he is infinite, independent, supremely intelligent, and supremely powerful. Descartes goes on to talk about how God exists because he can conceive of him as better than himself (AD 40). God is perfect and perfect at everything, and was the first thing that sent everything into motion (AD 45). God is the ultimate cause.
That story you heard? About how we were all created by a super-powerful dude named God who lives up in the sky? Total bullshit. The whole God thing is actually an ancient fairy tale that people have been telling one another for thousands of years. We made it all up.
Whether or not God exists is a debate that has been ongoing since the dawn of civilization. Although we might never be able to find a satisfying answer to the question, there have been multiple philosophers throughout time that have taken a worthwhile shot at it. One such philosopher was a monk from the 13th century by the name Of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas offers an argument in support of an existent god by pointing to what he calls efficient causation. The basis for this argument is that in a world where every reaction is caused by an action, there must be an original “push” of action to set the entire Universe into motion.
The Bible begins by saying, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The Bible portrays God as the eternal reality through whom all things exist and is the reality of a greater authority for Christians. Despite not being able to see Christ in the human form, we have faith in Him and see Him through creation everyday. The certainty of a Christian’s greater authority, which is God, is the proven response to our prayers being answered and miracles being made. Science is only possible because our universe is an orderly place ruled by natural laws.
Concluding that we cannot come up with a conclusion for god's existence, he argues instead we should utilize the possibility of reward , or impede possible punishments
The debate of the existence of God has always been a controversial topic and has been going on for centuries. Till this day it is still a debate. We have people who strongly believe in God and others who questions his existence. Those who have strong faith will try to convince everyone who does not believe in God that he exits. They will try to come up with arguments to show he is real and good.
Creation is something people have different opinions about worldwide, this is a topic that has many different theories. There have been many different ideas that people have thought of in order to try to get people to think that it wasn’t God who created the earth. Almost always the new story got its ideas, based off the story of God’s creation of earth. Some of these crazy theories even try to show that humans were originally monkeys, before they were humans. God spent a lot of time and thought when he was creating the earth, and for people to deny it and not give God any thought is very sad.
