Descartes Argument For The Existence Of God

Descartes presents an argument for how we know that we exist. It is difficult to question something we don’t know because we don’t know where to start. If there is an answer, there is a question, however if humans do not exist, there would be no one to question their existence. On the topic of existence, Descartes claims that he cannot be misinformed about his own existence, and that he is a thinking thing. Everything exists both through imagination and through reality. In some religions, people believe that there exists a deity that created us and is all powerful. Our knowledge of our history affects the decisions we make because we know the consequences if we take action or if the event occurs. The following will argue that we exist, and …show more content…

People are “so peculiar that some may be inclined to doubt [His] reality, or the significance of claims about [Him]” (Nagel, 337). We can’t prove that God exists in scientifically, but humanity has basically acknowledged that there is a God or gods. In many religions, they said that God has revealed Himself to mankind. One way he did it was by sending his son, Jesus, down to earth. There were many prophets, like Buddha, Muhammad, Moses, etc. But they never said they were God, they only said that they can communicate with Him, and were spreading His word. The universe was created millions, if not more or less, years ago; it did not always exist, and someone or something had to create it. Many Scientists say that the universe started out with a big bang. However, they did not have an explanation for what caused the big bang to happen. The same consideration can be said about everything on earth. In Nagel’s article, he talks about a caterpillar, and how it “is locked in a sterile safe by someone unfamiliar with insect metamorphosis, and weeks later the safe is reopened, revealing a butterfly” (Nagel, 345). This is one of the many examples of God’s creation. He decided to give this organism the ability to change its form from a larva to a flying insect. Humans do not have the ability to change forms, so each of His creations are unique, and authentic. We …show more content…

What people know from the past affects the present. What we do presently, will affect our future. If our past, present, and future does not exist, there is no need for us to be concerned about how it will affect us. Assuming that we do not exist, there would be no need to take action, because it will not concern us. Throughout human life, people always have “questions about the physically basis of [their] experience to assume a more intelligible form” (Nagel, 346). When an occasion happens, people learn from it, and determine either how they can avoid it from repeating in the future or how they can help others experience it as well. One terrible event in U.S. history was the terror attacks on 9/11. When the events unfolded, the government took action, and grounded all planes in the air. Following the circumstances, the government responded by making airport security tighter, and moved into the Middle East to make sure the same incident does not reoccur in the future. Even with the incidents happening today, like ISIS, are being focused on so it can be stopped and taken care of before a dreadful event happens in the future. On a lighter note, there are people who are researching medicine to help individuals treat sicknesses. Scientists and doctors have produced vaccinations, and procedures that can help the ill recover. If everything around us did not exist, then why would these doctors and scientists put all
