CHIANG MAI: Is known as the Rose of the North and is situated about 600 kilometers north of Bangkok. It has a large expat community and the climate is, in my opinion pleasant. The summer is hot but not as hot as Bangkok and the humidity, though stifling, is more tolerable than further south. The winter is very pleasant. The city’s surroundings are beautiful. There’s also less pollution except during the burning season. The burning season begins in February and continues until March. This burning occurs throughout Northern Thailand, Burma, Laos and Cambodia. The city is picturesque and you can enjoy a nice lifestyle there. From February through March of every year the locals burn rice straw. This happens in all of Northern Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Southern China. Again, during burning season many people choose to go south for a month holiday. The entertainment is mainly focused around a small area called Jed Yod road and there are not many restaurants that serve western dishes and those that do are more expensive than they were at home. Chiang Rai also has an international airport but except for a few flights to China, the planes all fly to and from Bangkok. This can be a deterrent to people who like to travel a lot because the only option is to fly to Bangkok then catch a flight to wherever you want to go. House rentals in Chiang Rai are quite inexpensive ranging from as low as 5000 baht for a basic 2 or 3 bedroom houses to 30,000 baht per month for a relative mansion. Within the late 19th century, child labor in America was at an all time high. During this time, many suffragettes took to the cause along with fighting vehemently for women’s rights. One of these inspirational women was Florence Kelley. On July 22nd, 1905 at the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s convention, Kelley delivered a strong speech regarding child labor and how the people should stand against it. In this speech, Florence Kelley uses a plethora of rhetorical strategies; including informal language and repetition, to convince the listener of her argument; the people need to stand up and stop child labor.

One fourth of the way around the world, away from Darfur is a similar problem concerning the Hmongs. Hmongs have resided in southern Asia for ages. They have done many great and if America wins, they would be responsible of building schools and sending teachers over to educate the Hmongs’ way of living. If America loses the war in Vietnam, Americans promised to welcome Hmong people over to America to escape any further harm or problems. Not many people know about this promise, but Hmong parents remind their kids everyday that if their children were to go to school and have racial discrimination against their language or culture, their children should remember the great things they did for America and challenge the saying that Hmongs should return to their homeland.
The Mingo were a highly developed culture and though displaced by Europeans, they have retained many of their customs and beliefs. This Native American tribe continues to show many aspects of its ancestry through daily practices and its religious and social structures even with European influence and displacement to reservations. A part of everyday life for Mingo Indians was the clothes that they wore. The men of the tribe wore breechcloths with leggings, and the women of the tribe usually wore kilts, wore wraparound skirts, short leggings, and overdresses.

Like Wang Lung, followers of Taoism stress the importance of being one with nature, and being connected to the land. Adherence to Taoism also comes with a life of simplicity, as Taoism denounces living a life of excess. Taoists believe that “such desires are bound to cause injury both to oneself and to others” (Bloom 1). One of the most identifiable practices of Taoism is the ritualistic burning of incense. Taoists will burn incense as a means of communication with deities, but also to pay respect to the gods (Taoist Federation 1).

Hmong Culture The Hmong primarily originated from the “mountainous areas of China, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos” (Purnell, 2014, pg. 236) and immigrated to the United States in 1975 after the Vietnam War. Primarily refugees from Laos, the Hmong people began immigrating to the United States in large numbers “after communist forces came to power in their native country.” (Bankston, 2014, pg. 332) Mainly settling in California, the Hmong began to be dispersed by American refugee settlement agencies across the country in the 1980s, also settling in Wisconsin and Michigan.
The culture of a country is defined by its own beliefs, its ways of life, its arts and other factors. Cultural differences are important because it distinguishes people living in a certain country from other countries. The differences between American and Vietnamese culture are striking, and they deserve rigorous examination. For example, marriage has the same meaning in both countries, which is the bonding of a man and a woman, but the wedding ceremonies are very unique.
It is somehow hard for us to discover the beauty of nature in Hong Kong, the hustle and bustle city. Only when we put the work or stress away temporarily, can we truly feel how beautiful the place we are living is. As a pessimistic person, I often get stressed easily. Usually I would put myself in a quiet place, away from the crowds and the hardship I am facing. Tai Po Waterfront Park is the place that cheers me up.
