CHIANG MAI: Is known as the Rose of the North and is situated about 600 kilometers north of Bangkok. It has a large expat community and the climate is, in my opinion pleasant. The summer is hot but not as hot as Bangkok and the humidity, though stifling, is more tolerable than further south. The winter is very pleasant. The city’s surroundings are beautiful. There’s also less pollution except during the burning season. The burning season begins in February and continues until March. This burning occurs throughout Northern Thailand, Burma, Laos and Cambodia. The city is picturesque and you can enjoy a nice lifestyle there. There are many restaurants and bars that cater to the many expats that call Chiang Mai Home. Rental costs in Chiang Mai tend to be a bit higher than other northern cities but food is cheaper. There are about 80 go-go bars and an uncountable number of beer bars. There are three major shopping centers in Pattaya and an abundance of good restaurants. For rentals a good choice would be one of the Thai style condos in the area of Naklua and Jomtien. Pattaya is not for the people who are not open minded about different lifestyles. MY TWO TOP CHOICES FOR RETIREMENT ARE: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. If you want to work however, there is no choice better than Bangkok.
