I felt a whirlwind of salty water push me further and further under. At this moment, I honestly thought that I was not going to make it out.
Seven hours earlier:
“Caitlyn time to wake up, we are leaving in twenty minutes!” It was five o 'clock in the morning, on a late August day. My family and I were about to head to the beach, like we do every year, and sit through a tedious four-hour car ride. Not only do I dislike the beach, but being forced to go for an entire week was overwhelming. However, it is not all awful, every year we go to the beach with our cousins; it is a tradition. Dad cheered through the house,“C’mon everybody, time to leave, woohoo!” He, on the other hand, was way overjoyed, that I couldn’t help but feel exuberant. Every year we go to the beach with them, it’s a tradition.
Hours later, our car accelerated over the bridge, symbolizing our arrival. We can feel the cool, salty air blowing on our faces through the car window. Once Dad parked the car, all five of us ran to the beach. As I stepped onto the hot sand, I could feel a stinging sensation on the soles of my feet, while in the distance waves crashed on the shoreline with a breathtaking impact. Within minutes my cousins arrived.
“Hey guys!” my cousins Samantha, Claire, and Meghan hollered while sprinting to catch up with my sisters and me.
“I am so excited, the car ride was really long but totally worth it! “ exclaimed Samantha.
