Fourth of July After a long and treacherous walk up the rugged flesh of the hillside we finally were able to muster up the energy to get very top of the hill. The sun was peaking through the clouds which it was enveloped by leaving little strands of amber sunlight rays which scattered across the horizon. We had only 3 minutes left before the sun closed its eye, so we furiously set up our chairs in anticipation for our cousins who were idly waiting by at the base of the colossal hill. “They are not going to make it” dad groaned as he set up the last makeshift chair out of some blankets and rocks. “Of course they aren’t going to make it, they spent too much time on the beach” Hal mocked in a similar tone as she positioned herself into the comforts of the chair. …show more content…
I grimaced at the sight of the occasional wildlife which scuttled past our campsite as my mind filled in explanations for the sounds around me. The sunlight had been devoured by the night resulting in the timer echoing across the hillside and into the valley. Lanterns from all over lit up the hillside rendering the campsites visible. The temperature jumped off a cliff right after sunset which made me regret swimming earlier that day as my wet swim shorts acted as a reminder of the freezing weather. The silhouettes shot up the hill at an exceptional rate which made me ask the question was this group really my cousins? “Hey they said they are almost here” dad croaked as he held the phone up to his now illuminated face. His stubble was given dark brown color when under the light and his dark brown eyes looked bright brown. “You sure dave? Because last time they said that they let us wait 2 hours!” Hal spat out while maintaining perfect eye contact with him. Her auburn hair and freckles were highlighted by the lanterns from the nearby
America has continued to grow as a nation in many ways: economically, technologically, idealistically, etc.; however, there is an area that still needs improvement. Othering is a term that describes exactly what America needs to improve on. Othering is when a majority group view or treat minorities as inferior and alienates them from higher social classes. America was built on the backbone of othering, yet we are guilty of it ourselves. Although we have grown much, discrimination has had its roots in our history and continues to remain as we age.
My sister is naive because she does not know why 4th of July is celebrated. The president looked pensive as he thought about a new law.
We have memorial day to remember all the people who died for our country freedom. It was officially was declared on may 5, 1886 by General John Logan. On the first decoration day General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of 20,000 union and confederate soldiers buried there. Memorial day also became more popular after World War I and World War II. There were more American lives lost during the Civil War then the two World Wars combined.

It is a warm summer night and shades of orange, red, and gold appear in the sky over the pine-covered hills. The sun soon disappears beneath the dark hills and darkness settles over the land. The buffalo, antelope, and elk find places to rest for the night and all is quiet except for the creeks and birds. In several hours, the sky will again be lit with a multitude of colors and the animals will begin to rise. A new day will begin in the Black Hills, just like it did hundreds of years ago.
In Frederick Douglass’s The Meaning of Fourth of July for the Negro, he exposes the hypocrisy and iniquity that is infused into considerably one of the most prolific American moments in history known as The Fourth of July. Douglass, who was a former slave that eventually reached freedom, was invited to speak about what Fourth of July meant for the black population within America. Although Douglass provided much gratitude to the Founding Fathers for their courage and ability to oppose oppressive systems, he criticizes the American country for its involvement within slavery. Slavery served as the foundation that constructed America, allowing for it fuel the economy and develop into a cultural and political norm within society.

“Sundown” Sundown, like three-dimensional etchings, leaves the night prowled by a parade of ghostly blues... Glowing like the luminescence of a billowless sea, it drowns both voyeur and fugitive beneath limitless vistas of telescoped remembrances... And as the breeze becomes the forerunner of a Halloween’d sweetness, the pungent earth draws cobalt curtains around a world now hushed in expectation... “Chill” January chills the newborn April day, and beckons across frost-flowers tiered against the sun. Desultory fingers shimmer around their edges: to plunge you deeper into my life than the silence of a desert night...
Nighttime had already settled in, and the clock was ticking closer to twelve a.m. It would have probably seemed like any other peaceful night. Suddenly, walls began to tremble. The floor started shaking. Loud booms rang out.
Every 4th of July my family and I, much like many other families in America gather for some good traditional fun in the sun! On this day each year the smell of BBQ, fireworks, and sometimes even gun smoke can almost be guaranteed to fill the air from dusk to dawn. Although, the majority of Americans celebrate this day, and it is a National Holiday there are people who don’t know the true reason, as to why it is celebrated, especially our children. This day, also known as “Independence Day” is the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed, sealed, and delivered.
Summary “I always hated the Fourth of July, even before I came to realize the travesty such a celebration was for Black people in this country” (10). In her piece, “The Fourth of July,” author Audre Lorde and her family took a trip to visit the nation’s capital over the Fourth of July holiday.
My Father and I driving down the dusty dirt road which is lined with 9 acres of pines on each side is just the Beginning of my grandma’s long driveway to her 40-acre home with her large wrap around deck facing Chain lake in North Branch, MN. What a beautiful setting where we held our annual 4th of July celebration each year. First when we arrived our eyes and noses are greeted with delicious tables of picnic food that have bright yellow corn with the sweet smell of butter, hamburgers and hotdogs that smell fresh off the grill, fruit trays with bright colors of red strawberries vibrant oranges and juicy purple grapes. The picnic tables filled up with more and more food as people arrived, after all everyone was told to bring a dish and didn’t disapoint. We send out invites each year to family and friends to come camping for the weekend.
Memorial day, an emotional road for many. This event occurs on every last Monday of May. Memorial is to remember veterans who have been injured or killed in a war. Memorial Day is one of the two days every year used to honor our veterans. Although, the earliest history of Memorial day is somewhat unknown. From a personal experience of my grandfather who was in a grim war was left with horrid memories.
