Imagine that you are in a crisis, you cannot only just grab what you can carry but what is of utmost importance to you…what would you carry with you? In the short story “The Things They Carried” we follow US Soldiers in the Vietnam war who are trekking through the jungle. The story touches on different characters and things of importance that they carry on their person for comfort, need and those without monetary value but sentimental value. I carry a picture of my sons 1st school picture, its not just a wallet size picture I bought either.

Through specific elements of form, and close scrutiny, photographs give a representation of the “bigger picture” by providing content and invaluable information that text, on its own, does not produce. Dr. Carol Payne, a professor of art history at Carleton University, wrote an essay in 2012 for the Oxford University Press. This essay focused on the relationships between photographic images, Canadian culture and identity, and indigenous people. Her thesis was to discuss how an image can present a sense of national identity (Carol Payne 310).
The narrator says the twins look like their mother and in that second, she realizes the family culture within her, which she did not understand before. She watches the photos together with her sisters, “eager to see what develops” (173). This is a wonderful part of the story, not only the quality of photos has changed, their family connection also develops. The people in the photos become closer and closer.
A couple weeks ago I was left home alone. My mom went out to Los Angeles and my brother slept over his friend's house. I went down stairs to get a glass of water. I heard the sound of the garage being opened . I gave it a second before checking to see what is was because the person who would have opened the garage should have came in already.
Nearly every time our family eats in Cracker Barrel, we get a laugh about some of the old photographs hanging on the wall. It is hard to believe that those people had to be perfectly still for a very long time to just take one picture. In the time it has taken me to write this paragraph, my dad took a bunch of pictures of our cat. On just our phones alone, the picture quality, speed, and color were probably unimaginable 100 years ago.

When you hold onto a photography they are generally a preserved version of a past memory that is important or a time of happiness.

Other than being a tool that captures memory, people nowaday also use it to defense anxiety, bring comfort, and share happiness. People can get rid of anxiety of being separated apart and bring comfort at foreign environment by simply taking pictures. Most importantly it shares the happiness with everyone that photographer wants to share.
Photographs are works of art that capture moments in time. They’re important because they document instances, which can later complete or create history. Looking at a photograph one is immediately intrigued. After studying the composition of the photo its meaning comes to mind, one begins to wonder why such a photo was taken. The overall meaning will have different effects depending on the viewer, but one must wonder again.

The shows underlying message, that there is more than just one kind of family and that we are all crazy is done with a kind humor that is a refreshing change from the modern reality TV we now see on most nights. One reason Modern Family has been a continued success over the years is their dedication to what the show was made to be, a comedy.
