Magical Korčula There are many magical places in the Mediterranean, but there is one place more magical than others. This place is located in the Adriatic Sea, in the land of Croats in the region of Dalmatia. You think this is a fairytale, another marketing trick? Read this! It was discovered as early as 6 century BC by the Greeks who named this island Korkyra Melaina, after that the Romans called it Korkyra Nigra, Black Korčula; inspired by the sight of the island they spotted on the horizon – the place seemed almost black due to the dense forest of holm oak trees. The legend says that this is the place where jealous Poseidon captured nymph Korkyra and the place where general Anthenor, escaping Troy, decided to found a town. Indeed, you cannot get lost in some blind alley in Korčula – perfect town plan made by old builders will always lead you to the sea – up and down and in circle, you are safe within those walls from East to West Town Gates, from Weapon Arsenal to Rampada which you cannot miss due to the three cannons, to Revelin Fortress with its stone bridge that cascades from its top (which you can climb) and looks like a waterfall which has stopped in time and its stairs will lead you to the Old Town.
