Light and dark, good and evil, right and wrong, everything comes in opposing pairs. Similarly, how I view myself and the world comes in two opposite forces: a light, lively view, and a dark, wretched view. When either mindset takes over, my mind morphs into a landscape that I imagine myself residing in. Each landscape makes me feel different. The light makes me confident and happy while the dark makes me self conscious and depressed. These images of darkness and light transform and clash in my head, changing my attitude and mood. Whenever I boast a positive mindset, I imagine my mind forming into a dazzling jungle blanketed in radiant light. When dreadful things happen to me while I inhabit the light mentality, the dark begins to creep in. Shadowy tendrils lurk across the green grass of the jungle, tainting everything in its path with horrendous thoughts. In the sky, a dark storm pelts infectious raindrops onto the colorful landscape turning it black. Even though the glowing land fades from the battle, I can allow light to flood back in by retaining a positive mentality and accepting that bad things occur. Similar to the dark infecting the light, the light can shine upon the dark. Whenever I remember optimistic thoughts while sorrowful, warm rays of luminous light shine through the gloomy clouds in the dark mindset. Both of them have gone through terrible, unimaginable journeys but lived in different conditions.
Have you ever felt trapped unable to escape a certain situation, as if stuck in a room with no doors? It is easy to get lost in this feeling living in this type of world. The novel Night by Elie Wiesel, which was first published in 1958, tells a great first-hand account of a terrible event named the Holocaust. In this story, it gives a detailed memoir of a young kid named Eliezar who has to endure this appalling crisis. As the Holocaust continues to go on around them, he and his family remain optimistic about their future. Even though they were optimistic, the Holocaust finally closes in on them.
