CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD WRITING

Introduction
Despite the saying of Shakespeare “the pen is mightier than the sword”, the pen itself is not enough to make an effective writer. In fact, inspiration alone is not the key to effective essay writing. It isn’t that hard to tell whether a piece of writing is good or bad. Good writing serves the reader, not the writer. Don Murray, a long- time writing teacher said, “The reader doesn’t turn the page because of a hunger to applaud”. Rather, a good writing anticipates the reader to turn each page, to answer the questions that arise. This also means that most of the writers are natural skeptics, more regarding their own work. It is a form of communication that lets a person to put his or her feelings and ideas on paper, to organize their knowledge and beliefs into convincing arguments, and to convey the message through well-constructed texts.

Characteristics of good writing
To present a detailed picture of basic qualities of good writing or characteristics of writing, I would like to keep few points related to good writing in my mind. For example, to write a book, some of the features like the construction of sentences and how the actual words are put together to form sentences, imagination, the organization of the plot, development of the characters, deeper levels of understanding the story, keeping reader’s interest and entertainment. Ideas are what it’s all about. Ideas are the most important aspect of a good writing. After all, ideas are the reasons for the writers to write. If we don’t have any ideas, we would not need any words to express them and thus don’t need to present any on paper.
