Beloveds Have you ever found the one? Searching– in and out, up and down, online, and around town –until you have no doubt; this is the one. The feeling gets burned into your memory. Others will come and go, like the green of the aspen trees, but not this one. This is a forever feeling. It will be impossible for you to forget the day that you found the perfect pair of pants. For some, it was a pair of oversized blue jeans, allowing the wearer to flourish in liberating comfort. Others have found perfection in a flamboyant red denim, which highlights their equally flamboyant lifestyle. For me, it was a simple pair of dark khaki pants. Perfection was but a word, to me, until the day that it was thrust upon me in the form of my beloved khakis. …show more content…
In fact, I have developed the unique ability to track them down from a mile away, using their scent alone. I have become so familiar with the scent of my pants, as one does with the scent of a significant other, that I perk up as my mom pulls them out of the dryer and tosses them carelessly into the laundry basket next to her. The warmth of the soft cloth; the unmistakably worn, yet fresh scent; the essence of memories, swelling within the seams: they all interact to form a distinguished smell, recognizable only by me. Instinctively, an idea for tomorrow’s outfit begins to form. I will wear my pants. After I realize that my khakis are prepared for their next use, I become ecstatic. I rush into the laundry room, looking for my precious. Underneath piles of old Levis and stained t-shirts, I feel a rush of enthusiasm pour over my body like a warm shower on a cold winter’s evening. The feel of the outside of the pants is satisfying enough, yet it is nothing compared to the sensations that can be found within the cocoon of cloth. The luxury within is in likeness to a swimming pool full of cotton balls, enveloping my legs with supreme comfort. The feel of my khakis is unlike that of any
I was filled with a new excitement after my discovery, and I quickly brought the shirtwaists to the designated location. I tucked the beautiful little book into my waistband and hoped my shirt would disguise its shape. When I returned to my family’s cramped tenement I was too exhausted to thoroughly examine the book. Home didn’t feel very different from what I was used to in the factory.
There are many things that we associate ourselves with, or that we like having. A lot of us like clothes. A lot of clothes. A variety of clothes that we can wear to match however we are feeling. Oftentimes, the fabrics we wear or possess mean something to us, whether they are from someone special or passed down through generations.
After two days of non-stop researching, calling, and garnering of information, I finally feel ready to proceed with the project. Having never done something like this in the past, the thought of an unsuccessful venture slips in and out of my mind; still, I advance. Opening the sleek white box I reveal a complex electrical component wrapped tightly in anti-static paper. As I peel back the wrapper I am careful not to place too much force on the device; crushing the delicate pins that number the board would be detrimental. Splayed in front of me are the various other components, each with its own definite function, all equally demanding of careful handling.
“I have albums placed like Tetris pieces in my locker next to a small stack of fabric cubes that once opened reveal sweat shirts. I have learned to fold to unprecedented sizes with precision that any military sergeant would be pleased by” (cite??). As once said by a California Institution for Women in Chino inmate, who is serving a eighteen year sentence. These lines stood out to me, because her words put me in the moment in the cell. Looking into her locker I fell like, I was observing the pictures, she was describing.
Nestled deep in the Smoky Mountains, is a small cabin. The family it once sheltered has long been gone. Once filled with life and hope, it now sits empty and bare. It stands as a monument to a time long gone, but soon it to will disappear. Disintegrating on the outside, rotting on the inside, and drowning in the ever thickening forest, it slowly crumbles away.
After thinking about how people perceive themselves I believe that scent is a way people use to hide ones true identity. People can be identified in various ways. For example looks, personality, or smells to name a few. If someone is not certain about his or her identity one may try to change the way they identify themselves. This is where

Sweat dripping down from my face onto the scale as I stepped onto the cold metal the would determine my fate. I prayed and closed my eyes as it calculated my weight. 103 pounds! My wrestling coach shouted and cheered as I had made weight to wrestle in the 105 pound weight class. All of my friends were filled with excitement and I basked in the glory.
Denim was once only thought of as a functional item of clothing belonging in the wardrobe of cowboys and construction workers, but label giant Calvin Klein set the fashion world on its ear when they featured a teenage Brooke Shields in an advertisement boasting that nothing came between her and her ‘Calvins’ (Barney & Hesterly, 2015, PC1-11). With this the designer jean movement began in 1970 and reached its pinnacle in 1981 “when sales jumped to record $6 billion and 520 million pairs” (Barney & Hesterly, 2015, PC1-12). Since this time, a myriad of premium denim lines have emerged, the largest of them being “Buckle, Guess, Joe’s [Jeans], Levi’s, Liz Claiborne, People’s Liberation, True Religion, and VF Corp” (Barney & Hesterly, 2012, PC1-39)
Much like the negative heel, albeit a different design, UGGs were also known for being comfortable and many people were seen wearing the classic tan color. In the present day, chunks of the past are modified and incorporated into modern designs. We see still boots made with the comfort of the 70s’, funky and colorful designs like the 80s’, and chunky boots reminiscent of the 90s’. “What a great day for a boat ride,” I thought to myself. It is a cozy warm, shorts and short sleeve shirt day at the time that people are arriving onto the big bulky catamaran. The sky is light blue with some dainty see-through clouds and a slight warm western breeze. I am located on one of the tropical islands of Hawaii, Kauai. The glossy white surface of the boat is blinding because of the reflection from the early evening sun.
A memorable and heavenly man aroma filled the air. The smell of cherry, wintergreen, apple, and butternut flavoured pipe and tobacco smoke mixed with the scent of hair tonics, pomades, oils, and neck powders. These aromas became ingrained in the wood and every cranny of the shop. The moment a man stepped inside, he was enveloped in the warm and welcoming familiarity. He was immediately able to relax, and as soon as the hot lather hit his face, his cares would simply melt away.”
